Just got a 600 and could use/need
Hi All
Just got a thinkpad 600. BUT how do you know its p2 233mhz?? mine does refer to p2 at all. Just curious.. Also does any kind 600 user out there have a spare battery both main and backup/bios they would like to sell? and some extra ram(mine came with 32meg) Would like to get these Items as cheap as possible. I know I can get them from ebay etc but they are a bit beyond the budget for what I wish to spend on the 600(have a spare £40 for everything).
kindest regards
Andrew

There are a couple of ways to determine the CPU speed. I believe that you can access the BIOS (Easy Setup) and it should say right there. (At least from memory it does for my 600E and 600X systems). Press and hold the F1 key while turning the power on. Continue to hold the F1 key until you see the Easy Setup display.lohtse wrote:BUT how do you know its p2 233mhz??
If you are running Windows on it, you can download various programs which tell you some things about your system. The easiest one I know if is CPU-Z:
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
Upper left corner of that page is a link to download the program. Download it, install it, run it and check the "Core Speed" entry on the CPU tab.

Someone might have the spare battery, but you may not be able to use it. Only the 600E and 600X can use the ultraslim battery. The regular 600 lacks the batter terminal in the device (ultraslim)bay. The main system battery is the same for all 600 model, and you find them better on eBay. If anyone here has a good 600 battery, they will not give it up lightly if they still use a 600.lohtse wrote:Also does any kind 600 user out there have a spare battery

Not to put words into the OP's mouth, but I think what he wants is any extra batteries (main and CMOS) that another 600 user might want to part with, as opposed to meaning the Ultrabay battery. At least that's how I read the request. I'm also going to be looking for some memory for a couple of 600Es I now have.

As for the backup (CMOS) battery, I just made my own. I removed the factory battery from my ThinkPad and with a Razor, I cut off the yellow jacket. I then removed the connectors from the battery with a pair of small needle nose pliers. You just grab the lead connecting to the battery and gently pull up. Once the leads were off, i went to radio shaq and purchased a battery with the same number on it (looked like a watch battery) and placed the leads on it. I then wrapped clear tape around it was ready to be installed.
I have done this 4 or five times for different ThinkPads and have had no problems.
I am currently working on replacing the cells on my bad 600 battery.

For the record, the battery that lswone is referring to is a watch battery...CR2025. Though some have used a CR2032, which might last even longer, but the CR2025 is what matches the original CMOS battery for the 600 series.
I have replaced several CMOS batteries in the 600 series Thinkpads with the watch batteries from Wal-Mart.

Hi All..
Thank you for the replies sorry for the late reply work has been dam crazy.. And yes was asking if anyone has any spare ram(16,32megs or greater) for sale. Would be very useful, I have upgraded ram to 48megs as found 16megs in an old laptop. Also need a main battery as main one is completely dead. As to backup/bios battery. So I can use a standard watch 2025,2032 battery for this?? If I upgrade to 64meg ram or greater can I install XP and how well does it run(currently using 2000) ??and is it possible to change cdrom for a dvdrom and what else can I change/upgrade??sorry for all the questions but really want to get the best out of the 600.
regards
Andrew
PS
I have the original hard drive that came from the 600(put a 20gig in) and 2 20gig hard drives going spare if some one wish to exchange for ram

I would skip the quest for 32 and 64MB RAM. For XP, you're going to want 2x128MB at the least. Will it be connected to the internet? A/V and firewalls really suck up the memory.

Sorry, I thought he was looking for all three batteries, main, CMOS, and the ultraslim. Unfortunately i do not have a spare battery to give up at this time.
Lohtse, contact alphakilo470 and see if he has some spare ram. You can say I told you to contact him. He usually has spare RAM of all types, but I don't know if he has spare RAM for the 600 series, but he might. I don't know how much he will charge for, but I don't think it will be much.

Re: 600 Parts
You might also try jamiphar. I've traded a variety of things with him and know that he has some 600 parts available... what, exactly, I can't remember. I really loved my 600s when my wife and I both had one!
