Changing fan on T4x

#1 Post by ibmt40 » Fri Sep 10, 2004 5:13 am

Hey there

I have decided to change my cpu fan for the long m10 to reduce the noise.

First of all, does it help at all? (i am pretty sure i have the noisiest fan on the earth)

Second of all, how do i change it?
I am studying computer science so i am pretty technical but i would like a guide to be sure that i do nothing wrong.

Can anyone either write a short guide or link to a nice one?

If so, i would be eternally gratefull cause my fan is noise and it just keeps on going when it first starts. Other than that, the laptop is totally sweet...

To my experience changing fan does not affect surge/cycling itself but on the whole long fan M10 is dramatically more quiet than short stock fan. With short fan you hear motor buzz whereas with long fan mainly air flow. So personally I would strongly recommend to swap fan. (As well as keyboard if you happen to have China one)

ibmt40, if you do swap the fan, can you post the results? I'm almost certain that the noise you hear, is from mine and not yours :D and I'm in Canada...

I have debated for a while if I want to make the swap - My t40p has the fan on ALL the time - It only goes off for a little while, when on battery power - However, I'd have thought the fan to go off once in a while when doing light work: internet, mail, etc, etc.

I have all the latest BIOS stuff - Let me know how your swap goes, if you decide to do it...

I changed the fan (I have a T41 with radeon 7500=short fan), the new fan is more silent but I have always the noise because this stupid fan run always....
And I know if you can have a problem with the warranty because the fan is not a part that is authorized to changed ? If IBM see a T41p fan in a T40 ???
If you want the silent buy an external fan from Thermaltake (USB) and see my post: http://forum.tt-hardware.com/ultimatebb ... 12978&p=11

Yes I have decided to change the fan and I will post the results here.

I am experiencing the excact same thing as you "atlacatl" and i have read in the maintainence guide and it should not be so difficult at all.

I really hope it just will take the edge off the noise so i am looking forward to the change.

I have ordered my part and i must say it is pretty cheap. 20$ for a new fan - being originally IBM and all.

I will post news when i have the fan and tell my opinion about it...

BTW. If you change fan, use gloves and keep the old one nicely packed away so you can put it in for warranty service. :)

Hey boys and girls

Great news.

I just got my new m10 long fan today and i installed it without futher problems following the hardware maintainence guide. Pretty easy.

I have used my laptop for a couple of hours without ac connected and first of all the fan started very late and i didn't really notice it. GREAT. I belive the noise from the fan i reduced with about 50% and the noise it makes is alot more comfi.

Second of all i have noticed that my fan turns on and off when it is suppossed to like any normal laptop. That means that when the temperature hits 40 degrees or so it turns off and goes on later when it is suppossed to. GREAT news, maybe the best news...

Now i really feel that my T40 is the best laptop in the world... I is simple a superb buy 20$ for a nice fan that makes your stay at your laptop a complete pleasure...

Realy boys, this is too good to be true. Actually now it is my harddrive that bugs me the most, be it doesn't bug me... if you understand what i mean... ;)

I can only recommed changing fan, its easy and it is very much worth the money.

FRU: 13R2657 (long m10 fan)

If you have any questions about changing fan or like that please contact me on kim "att" votus "dot" dk (notice its written in none spam mode :))

Hope you can use this information... This is a great day for Thinkpads.

ibmt40,

Thanks for the update - I think I will make the swap, since the fan is noisy and is on ALL the time. At low speed, but it is on when on AC.

Did you have any issues with the video card contact?

I read somewhere that the long fan, doesn't quite touch the videa card.

I have the T40p, so my video card may be different from the T40 model.

I bought the same fan but .... :(
What is your video chipset ?
Did you have any issues with the video card contact?
Do you put thermal pad or thermal grease between the GPU and the rad ?
(the original pad is not very "good")
With the original fan your fan is on all the time or not ?
Thanks a lot.

Hey i think the concact with the videocard is okay, but i really don't know.
There was a sort of rubber label on the fan that i removed, but i don't know if i should - ??? (I have et still so i can put it back on, but it seemed rigth to remove it at the time i think.

I have a 7500 gfx card.

I have the same fan and the same GPU: the contact is not perfect, the fan on the GPU is not completely flat.
If you read the hardware manual you can see that you don't need to removed the rubber label (pink pad, now you have just a black pad ?) (page 104),
When i put the new fan, i have the rubber label and the fan is on all the time,
i don't remember if i try without the rubber label
