Dual Monitor with T60 Dock on Vista?

#1 Post by dandiep » Tue Jan 09, 2007 4:16 pm

Has anyone gotten a second video card working with Vista using the T60 Advanced Dock? I bought an ATI Radeon X300 SE PCI Express card. I installed the latest ATI drivers (from 12/13), and when I boot up after installing I get the blue screen of death. It says hardware malfunction (I could 've sworn it was software...) - parity error. I also tried an NVIDIA card, but couldn't get that to work either.

Anyone know any tips or tricks? Are there special drivers needed for the dock?

Try disabling the internal video card when the machine is undocked, and reboot with it docked and the video card installed. Also, set the Dock video card to be the primary video card in BIOS.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the point though? I want both my internal and dock video card on at the same time.

Oddly enough, I can't get the computer to display anything if I set the boot device to the PCI Express slot. It just gives a blank screen. Something weird is going on....

Not necessarily. I have a T42 with dual external monitors on the Dock, and the only way I can get it to work is to disable the internal video. It would be nice to have the laptop screen as a third screen, but I don't really need it (two 24" monitors is plenty) and much of the time I prefer to have the laptop lid closed on the Dock anyway - it's much tidier. So to me, it doesn't defeat the purpose to have the internal video disabled. But we all have different purposes!

I read somewhere that for Vista to work with multiple video cards, the driver has to be the same for the various cards. It's odd that an updated OS would have a restriction like this, so it may not be true, but it might be worth looking into. For what it's worth, I could never get Vista to work with my T42 and multiple video cards. Had to give it up.

I realise the last two posts of mine look like they contradict each other! The solution - I run Windows 2003 when I'm on the Dock and have two external monitors, and Windows Vista when I'm undocked. It sounds crazy, but actually I've really grown to like this setup...

Seems that AMD is looking into this:

I filed a support request. We'll see how long it takes for a resolution...
