It's here! My new T41p

#1 Post by Temetka » Tue Jan 09, 2007 11:32 pm

So after a much anticipated wait, my T41p has arrived, I am actually typing on it right now. This machine feels really fast. You can check the specs in my other thread but here's the basics:

1.7GHz CPU
ATI FireGL 128MB Graphics
1GB RAM
60GB HD
Combo Drive
a/b wireless
14.1" 1400x1050 LCD

I am in the process of downloading R&R right now. After that, all I need to do is make a backup set of CD's right? I would like to partition in the following manner:

20GB XP-PRO
5GB Fat32 for share between linux and windows
10GB for Linux
25GB for Vista

I know that partition scheme does not leave any room for the hidden partition. Is that ok? I am assuming that since I will have the backup CD's that I can 'flash' my HD at any time and return it to it's shipped state. Meaning wipe the HD, load the CD's and move on.

If someone could verify this for me before I run off and wipe out a major partition on my HD that would be great.

I have only loaded a few apps so far: Firefox and Adobe Reader 7. Simply because later on tonight I intend on re-doing the hard drive in prep for class tomorrow night. Any help with this is of course, greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I am really loving this T41p so far!

So minus a weird error with system recovery (R&R 3.1) everything seems ok so far. As soon as I finish burning these discs I am going to wipe the HD and do a reload of XP SP2 and configure everything to my liking. (After testing the CD's and making sure there good of course).

I have noticed a white spot on the LCD and one stuck pixel. I'll try massaging the pixel and see if that clears it up. Any suggestions for that white spot though?

RE the LCD: 14.1" at 1400x1050 is deceptively easy on my eyes. I was kind of worried that switching from the 15" widescreen on my PBG4 would be hard to adjust to, but it isn't thanks to the higher resolution.

I also checked the RAM in this machine. The seller (Thinkpad World) said it included 1GB of RAM. It does. In a 1 stick configuration under the keyboard. That is so cool. I was expecting 2 x 512MB sticks. So now I can just do a nice and easy upgrade to the 2GB limit. Sweet.

I also have to mention that I am really surprised by the speed of the burner. It's very quick. It seems to average about 4 minutes per disc. That is fast enough for me.

More to come as I and my T41p get acquainted with one another. This is feeling like the start of an excellent relationship. I did miss my old T23, but this machine is far and above superior in all ways and really brings back that feeling of owning not just a great laptop, but an IBM Thinkpad T-Series at that! 8)

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!

My machine has a 40GB HD installed!

WTF?

According to the auction description, and IBM Lenovo a 2373-GGU should include a 60GB 7,200RPM Drive.

Why is this happening to me?

I have contacted the seller about this. We shall see what their response is. I can't afford the downtime of having to cross ship laptops. Nor can I afford to ship it back and purchase another one.

I knew everything was going too smooth.

I noticed that there was like 27GB free, but I thought the infamous hidden partition took up a large amount. It doesn't. It's 3GB or something. Gah!

This puts the screeching brakes on my plans for getting everything set up nice and cozy like.

BTW - The seller is Thinkpad World. Rest assured, I will be contacting them via phone (already sent an e-mail) later on today.

For now it's 3 am, I am going to bed.

Your laptop came shipped with a 5400RPM drive, you should contact the seller and ask to replace the HDD, maybe you could make your warranty valid with Lenovo arguing that your HDD has crashed, so they could ship you the correct HDD size and speed

No. It's refurbished. However in the listing, the seller states it has a 60GB hard drive.

here is the laptop in question.

Now tell me that does not state in very large lettering that it comes with a 60GB hard drive.

They are sending me a new keyboard. They key just above the right arrow works, but is at some weird angle. Anyway the KB went out today so I know they got that message, but they have not yet responded to my inquiry about the HD mismatch.

Nice machine. It looks like they owe you another drive. You'll get it. They look like a reputable seller. And if they're not, eBay and/or PayPal will make you whole.

Good luck.

Well I have already messaged them about the HD. The ball is now in their court. I am going to call them tomorrow and we will go from there. Hopefully they will do one of the following:

1. Ship me the correct drive and I will ship them the 40GB drive
2. Ship me the 60GB drive and let me keep the 40GB drive.
3. Offer some other thinkpad goodies in lieu of an HD (an HDD bay adapter would be nice).

they could take door #4:

Do nothing and ignore me. I will leave negative feedback, contact e-bay, the BBB and Paypal. File a dispute with VISA.

I sincerely hope it doesn't come to that though.

Sometimes it is better to buy from a single owner , because he/she might know what is exactly in it.

They should provide you with what is listed in the auction, it might have been a mistake on IBM's side if the package was sealed when you got it .

So I called Thinkpad World. He does NOT refurb any laptops. Just buys them from IBM adds some RAM and thats it. SO I have to call IBM about my issues. I have been calling 1-800-334-9693 but no one answers.

Can I file for warranty on the HD online?

Thanks.

Try (800) 426-7378. Should get you through to IBM/Lenovo in Atlanta, GA. Might take a little patience, but in the end, they always take care of me. Good luck, I love my 2374GGU - T41p

True. With the volume he does, it would be a lot for a single guy to handle though.

I am still a believer in "the benefit of the doubt." In this case I trust him.

You got a nice laptop there. But to me the hard drive is less of an issue than the stuck pixel, looking at it warranty wise down the road. Of course I am the one who stares at a [censored] stuck pixel all the time! If I were in your shoes and still within the 10 days, I'd exchange it, but that's just me, of course I might get one with 2 stuck pixels back!

If the laptop is still under warranty, wouldn't IBM replace the LCD for free?

Yes, but I'd have to send it in. I am in the middle of a quarter. That would be painful. The stuck pixel doesn't bug and I think it's gone.

I'll give that other number a call on monday.

If Ezserv will not send you a replacement drive, then the seller is responsible. They sold you something that was not what they described... they should swap it out for another unit or compensate you for the drive.

Unsure about IBM replacement policy on dead/stuck pixels because I didn't have to do it, but there are a certain number of bad pixels before manufacturers will replace your lcd. They say it's part of the manufacturing process, so it's just your (bad) luck if you get a unit with 1 or more bad pixels. Asus is an exception afaik. But it's moot since the OP is ok w/ it and has fixed it I think.

The minimum you can get under the replacement policy is 11 clustered bad pixels on an SXGA+ 14.1"/15". It's actually governed by IBM/Lenovo's implementation of the ISO 13406-2 standard on this page. :)
