PCI Video Card Output to LCD on TP 770?

#1 Post by SilentDude56k » Wed Jan 10, 2007 11:37 am

I just upgraded the processor in my ThinkPad 770, and now I feel the need to upgrade again. :P I am planning on buying the SelectaBase III and the Port Replicator from eBay so I can pop in an old 3Dfx Voodoo card, or some other decent PCI video card.

However, I'm worried that I would only be able to use an external monitor if I did that. Is there a way to make the video output from the PCI video card go to the built in LCD screen? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but it would be great! :D

Thanks for any help!
ThinkPad 770:

Windows XP Pro, 400 MHz Mobile Pentium II PE (on-die 256 KB L2 cache), 416 MB RAM (2 Crucial PC133 256 MB sticks + onboard 32. BIOS disables half of one stick), 15 GB Hitachi HDD, Trident Cyber9397 2 MB...:'(

Backlight replaced by me!

No.

Installing a PCI video card so that it works correctly with an external monitor can be a bit tricky with some operating systems and configs, so that alone can be a challenge. But regardless, the video signal from the PCI video card cannot be sent back into the ThinkPad and then rerouted to the LCD monitor: the video card output is the VGA/DVI port so your output device has to be connected to that port somehow.

For some suggestions about which old video cards to use, you might want to consult my Unofficial Graphics Card Compatibility List for the SelectaDock III.
