23733VU Education Model: "End-of-Life"
23733VU Education Model: "End-of-Life"
I see the 2373-3VU on IBM.com's education section for a very nice price (about 31% off!). Thing is... why's it so cheap? And when I click on "Customize," it says "This product is nearing end-of-life and is no longer available."
Anyone have news for me? Any reason not to buy a Pentium 735 1.7ghz / 512mb / 80gb 5400rpm / DVD-RW / Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG / Gbit Ethernet / Win XP Pro / 14.1" SXGA+ / Radeon 9600 64mb / 3-year EasyServ warranty for $2,129?

That model has been available for that price for several months, dunno why it would be retired, it's still nearly top of the line. If true, my guess is it's being replaced by a similar model.
When i ordered, I got a 2374-3VU, but chances are the difference in model number only reflects a different warranty.

Re: 23733VU Education Model: "End-of-Life"
It probably does - the difference between a 2378-EZU and 2379-EZU is that the 2379 has 3 years of depot warranty and the 8 only has 1. They are both considered thinkExpress models.
I'm starting to think that maybe odd-numbered models = 3 year warranty? I haven't really checked this thoroughly though. It'd be nice to know how to "Decode" thinkpad models, because it's fairly obvious that there is some sort of scheme at work...

I think it's a bug on the site. Other orders give the same errors and at other institutions also. Call IBM if you want to order one and the site is being funky!

I don't think this is any bug... This could be a hint 'something' is going to 'change' very soon...sktn77a wrote:I think it's a bug on the site. Other orders give the same errors and at other institutions also. Call IBM if you want to order one and the site is being funky!
EDIT: Then again, you never know.
You know, unless a part number is flagged as a workhorse model which is guaranteed to be available for a set length of time, specific part numbers or configurations come and go all the time as IBM tweaks their product line. You guys need to stop having heart attacks every time a model goes EOL. It doesn't necessarily mean the next big thing is coming out next week.

It appears it was a bug after all... The 2378FVU model is now in stock (63 at the time of posting) in the education section... It previously had a shipping date of 5 days.

I have one. I would buy one again. My only regret is that I paid more than $2129!mr_mbuna wrote:I see the 2373-3VU on IBM.com's education section for a very nice price (about 31% off!).
