external hard drive enclosure T40
external hard drive enclosure T40
I just got an external hard drive enclosure, popped a drive in, hooked it up to my desktop, everything was fine.
Then, I attempted to connect to my T40, no dice. The system recognizes it and tells me that it is connected, but it doesn't show up under My Computer, and the led light never goes solid the way it does when it is hooked up to my desktop.
It connects via USB 2 and uses an ac adapter for power.
Can anyone tell me how to get this thing to work with my thinkpad ? That was the main reason I bought the enclosure in the first place.
Thanks.

skaters do it to fakie
Okay for some reason if I connect a usb hub, I can to get the drive to work, but if I plug it right into the usb port on the T40, it still does not work.
This is annoying, but not as annoying as having it not work at all, I still would like to know why I cannot just plug it in and have it work properly.

It seems the section under Non-standard could apply to your situation.

Did you try rebooting laptop while external drive is connected to USB port? Sometimes this works for me when I have problems getting recognition of external devices.
The other thing is try using the usb HUB cable (which you know works) to connect the external enclosure direct to laptop (don't use the enclosure supplied cable)...
I've found cables to be problems in the past with similar hookup, specifically with an iRiver H120 MP3 player (which hooks up as external hard drive). I have a couple of cables (which work fine with other devices) that absolutely won't allow the PC to recognize the player when I hook it up...

Same issue on T60P
Hey did this ever get resolved?
I'm running into the same issue with a USB2 IDE hard drive/enclosure. Windows recognizes and happily (& succesfully) installs the hardware. Device Manager says it is running just peachy. The enclusure's light turns a comforting blue.
But the new device doesn't show up in Explorer.
I've tried all 3 USB ports & rebooting with the device connected. Still can't see it in Explorer.

I don't know if it's resolved, but here's a link to another thread where I posted a possible solution as I have seen similar situations. There are also other suggestions of course which may help.
