Over heating CPU on a T20
When I first got my T23 I had the same problem over heating CPU I could not install XP without it shutting down. The problem was solved with Arctic Silver and now it can run all day at 1.13Ghz and never go above 60C. I used the Arctic Silver on the 700 Mhz T20 and it helped but it shuts down all the time. To install XP I had to take off the keyboard and dab the fan housing with a moist paper towel. I'm running Mobil Monitor. The CPU always stays at 700Mhz. If I do anything CPU intensive the temp climbs to 100C and instantly shuts the computer off. Can I have the CPU slow down if it gets hot? Is there a setting for this?

Check the screw housings on the fan assembly to see if two of them are spring loaded. If not, the original assembly would most probably have come with some sort of thermal sponge or foam. You can either replace this foam or else get a fan assembly from a T21 or T22. Otherwise, the fan, and or its connections, may need cleaning/replacement.

Thanks for the reply. The screw housings on the fan assembly are not spring loaded and now that I think about it the fan assembly does not touch the CPU. I know this because when I removed the housing the Arctic Silver was not completely squeezed out. What is adaptive mode and does anyone have FRU numbers for the T21-2 fan?

You can use the IBM battery maximizer utility, which can place a green battery meter on your taskbar. You can set the CPU to max (always at 1.2ghz), adaptive (fluctuates between 1.2gh and...800mhz-ish, depending on need), and slow, which will keep it at the lower speed.
You probably should get another fan, but why don't you try running tpfancontrol, available in the Utility forum. You can set your fan to always run, and see what happens with the temps.
edit: looking back, I think we are talking about a T20, not a T23...so your CPU will be fluctuating from 700mhz to something like 500. Also, tpfancontrol will not run on the T20-22.

I dug the old thermo sponge out of the garbage can and put it back in with the Arctic Silver and now the temp stays about 80C @ 700Mhz 100%. I have a 1Ghz CPU coming I bought on ebay for $1 + shipping. I hope I can keep that thing cool.

Does anyone know of a program that will test out my new setup? I was using the XP disk defragmenter but now it will only run for a minute.

I'm not sure the old thermofoam fan is up to keeping a 1Ghz CPU cool. I recently bought a couple of new T21/22 fan assemblies from ebay for about $6 each - a small price to pay to prevent the CPU from overheating.Spirit-1776 wrote:I dug the old thermo sponge out of the garbage can and put it back in with the Arctic Silver and now the temp stays about 80C @ 700Mhz 100%.
