Warranty(maintenance services vs Protection services upgrade

I am interested in upgrading the standard 1 yr warranty with either an extended warranty or protection services for 3 years when I purchase a z61m.

From looking at the lenovo web site, it isnt entirely clear to me what the difference is? Won't a 3 year protection service cover me even for other general failures/issues with the machine?

Any help shedding light on this topic would be highly appreciated!

The protection service is for accidental damage, like dropping it or spilling a liquid on it, which would not be covered by anyone's normal parts and labor warranty. I don't think you can buy the protection service without buying also the warranty for the same period.

Also you have a 30 day limit from the date of purchase to buy any of the protection packages. You have until the end of your warranty to purchase any warranty extensions.
