What are the differences between a T20, T21 and T22 MB's

#1 Post by Msmax » Mon Jan 15, 2007 8:57 am

I have a notebook with a diferent mainboard number then the one on the label.

According the Lenovo site the machine is a T21, according the mainboard number it is a T20. So, I guess the mainboard has been changed.

I would like to know what the differences are between the mainboards of a T20, T21 and T22.

Is it possible to change the number in the mainboard to match the number on the label at the bottom?

Thanks, Msmax

Main difference would be ram speed. I think the T22 supported SD-133 while the other two supported SD-100. Also the T22 has a 16Mb savage where as the other two have an 8mb savage.

I would correct that T23 is the only one that support SD 133 and the others support SD 100. Besides that only T23 has a 16MB graphic processor. More info....can be found in the thinkpad tawbook : http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1689

Thanks for your replies.

I tried to find a difference but did not succeed.
The only thing is that the latest T22 boards supported 1Ghz processors.

- all have PC100 bus
- all have 8Mb Savage videochip
- same I/O connections
- etc...

I wonder why IBM has so many different FRU numbers for the same part!?

Any idea houw to change the xxxx-yyy number in the Bios to match the one on the bottom?

Msmax

google: "Hardware Maintenance Disk v1.74"

I think this is the disk you need to change the serial numbers/model numbers in the BIOs to match whats on the body.

This disk was never publically available from IBM, but has found itself out in the wild.
T43 1.8 / 2GB / 60GB 7K100 X31 1.4GHz / 2GB / 60GB 7K100

I don't to offend anyone, but most of these posts offer incorrect information, so I'll try to provide the most good answers I have:
T23 supports the PC133 ram chips, and has a 16mb videochip
T20 does not support SXGA+, T21-T22 motherboards do
T20-T22 supports up to 1GHz processors (T20 & T21 require CPU upgrade)
T23 supports up to a 1.2GHz processor
T20-T22 can hold up to 512mb of RAM, T23 can hold 1gb
that's all I've got for now, I'll try to think a little bit more. I know you didn't ask about the T23, but just wanted to clear up a few previous posts. Good luck.
