X40 1,2Ghz Model Fan Noise

#1 Post by cedmo » Sat Sep 11, 2004 7:15 am

Hello,

one question to the board, and yes I have searched for it but I need more detailed information:

I have bought an X40 with 1,2Ghz. But every time I start working with it after 10 Minutes the fan goes off and never stops again. I was in contact with another X40 user who said to me that his device is cooling the whole time, too. But in his case his device's fan is so silent he can't hear it. My next problem with my fan is, that it does a little speedup every 4-5 seconds. Is this common?
My question to the board is, how loud is your's? Can you really hear it in a quiet room? Do you have this "speedups" too? Which X40 Variant do you have? Is the X31 less noisy?

Sorry for that bunch of questions, but I have this device and love it. But nobody can tell me if this is normal or a defect. And there are no other X40 users around to compare.

Thank you in advance for your answers,
Cedmo :(

The fan on my X40 is very quiet. When it 1st spins up I can hear it come on but after it's running I can't really hear it. There are no speedups as you call it I assume you mean like cycling of the fan the T-Series was plagued with.

The 4-5 s speedup is renowned problem of fan in T and R series ThinkPads. The latest embedded controller partially solved the problem by converting 4-5 s speedup to 30 s speedup. I have never heard about the same problem on X ThinkPads however.

Do you have the 1,2Ghz Model, too? If yes, then mine must have a defect. I can't imagine that this noise is normal while everything on this notebook is just perfect.

Thanks for your Answer

Owned a X40 (whose size and battery life I loved); returned it because of excessive noise:

1) Fan went on on the slightest usage - and did not stop once running. Fan noise was miles away from being "nearly inhearable".

2) HDD produced continuous high-pitched noise

3) Another high pitched noise was apparent, raising with cpu/system perfomance setting

Got a T41p some days ago. Fan and HDD (7200rpm) are making some continuous noise _all_ the time. But it is NOT high pitched, and overall seems to be quite less intensive than the X40 fan. The T41p noise floor seems to be okay, while X40's was absolutely annoying.

Well, there have been other reports about high pitched and headache provoking noise on the net. But obviously not all of them are that noisy (except the virtually never stopping fan). Maybe it was indeed bad luck that the HDD and in addition some other non moving parts both made ugly noises.

Hmm.. Never seen anything about noise and the X40 on the net.
Many things on the noise level and T4xx series though.

Pros: Durable keyboard build. Tiny and light. Nice screen. Good media base.

Cons: The fan or hard drive makes an extremely high pitch, though feint (emenating from the left side of the machine), hum that drives you crazy. Couldn't use his computer in a quiet environment without getting a headache. [..]

Gee
I just read them and 1 person out of 50
doesn't seem to be a problem to me.

Anyway you returned yours and mine doesn't have the problem
so this is moot.

i agree with the post above. There is no sound emitting from MY X40, and the fan is one of the quietest I've ever heard. Maybe it's just because I'm lucky..

I have a 1.2 GHz X40 (7321-7GU). I would agree with Phil -- I never even heard or noticed the fan. I have to put my ear next to the fan to hear it. I use the maximum performance power scheme so the CPU runs at 1.2 GHz. The fan runs continuously I believe but it's so quiet I can't hear it. Just lucky I guess since I've never noticed any fan noise problem in any of my Thinkpads - 600, A31p, T30, or this one.

I got a X40 2371-HU1 about three weeks ago. Initially things seemed fine. But then, three usual noise developments occurred:
1. incessant low-speed fan. the fan runs all the time, no matter how idle the machine is or how cold the surrounding temperature. The fan did stop for a little bit when I ran some PC-Doctor tests.

2. high-pitched morse-code like noise coming from the microphone when the computer is on battery power and running certain applications. I've noticed this noise is always triggered by loading a web page with flash with Internet Explorerer. The noise is something like "teek, teek, teeeeek, teek, teek, teeek." Disconcerting. The intensity of this noise can be diminished by lowering the performance setting to power saver. It disappears when the AC is plugged in AND when the sound recorder is recording. But as soon as recording stops, the teeek teeek comes returns.

3. AC adapter makes a high-frequency eeek sound when plugged into the wall. That's okay, it's not noticeable. But when the computer is powered by AC and the I'm scrolling through a web page in Internet Explorer, hitting the up, down, pg up, or pg down buttons causes the AC adapter to make a faint but distinct zap sound. It's like a bzz.

Called tech support. They had no idea, but surmised that there might be a problem with the circuits.
