DVD-RW problem

#1 Post by ryengineer » Tue Jan 16, 2007 10:31 pm

My DVD drive is not reading any blank CDs/DVDs at all. The strange part is; it can all CDs/DVDs that I previously burned. I am clueless, any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is reading all cds/dvds except blank CD-R and DVD-R.

The error says "Error: D drive not accessible".

There are only 3 possible causes I can think of for this situation, and all are obvious: (1) defective notebook burner; (2) a brand or type of blank media this particular drive does not like, a not uncommon situation; (3) a software problem.

In order to determine which of these you are dealing with I'd try another brand of the same type of blank media to see if it is recognized, if that doesn't work then you can eliminate #2. If you only have one cd/dvd burning software package and you have a copy of another like OEM Nero or whatever, you could load that and see if the other software recognizes the disks, in which case it is presumably a software problem. You could also run a registry cleaner like CCleaner (free download) to see if this gets rid of any unknown registry glitches that could be causing this.

If none of these things change the situation and especially if the machine is still under warranty, call tech support and tell them your drive doesn't work properly and you'd like a replacement. They should send you a new drive for free and you will get a box to send the old one back to them.

What I would try first is uninstalling the DVD/CD entry from Device Manager, rebooting and letting it reinstall automatically.

You should have the remaining warranty for your T60, right? Call IBM/Lenovo and get them to replace the faulty drive for you & meanwhile you can try to read the blank CDs/DVDs using an external drive/burner or best still use your friend's thinkpad DVD drive on your thinkpad and see whether the problem goes away or not.

Who is saying that? What's your procedure? Insert a blank DVD, click on the drive (letter) in windows explorer and then the error message pops right up? Or does your burning software deny eating blank DVDs?
