Hello, I recently posted a thread asking about if my t60 got burned out, and I got a bunch of great responces. Now my question is what is your standard acceptable running temperatures.

I use fedora core 6, using the battery and normal unstressful tasks (browsing, reading email, etc), the fan comes on at 49 or 50 and stops at 44 or 43. After a minute and a half or two minutes, the temp is back up to 50.

Plugged in, cores running 100% and fan on, I get about 68.

Are these figures within acceptable bounds? Sorry again for asking stupid repetative questions, I am a total thinkpad newbie (I love them though!!!)

Honestly, I think you are worrying about nothing. Newer dual core notebooks tend to run hotter than older single core notebooks, but in the end they are engineered for this and unless you are doing something weird with your notebook, I'd say use it and forget about measuring this stuff.

Below 80C, you really don't have any problems -- other than the ThinkPad getting rather hot to touch. Processors etc are designed to run up to 80C, so 68C at 100% CPU utilization is quite OK.

Actually, this is not quite accurate. Intel rates their dual core processors for safe use up to 100C.

grahamdavis, your cpu temp concerns are as valid as getting a sunburn in your basement. Chill (pun intended)

I do believe this is correct ... but there are a lot of other components inside a ThinkPad as well, and I'm not sure all of them will run up to 100C.

I think the original poster simply asked about "acceptable running temperatures". By my reckoning, that would include anything and everything inside a ThinkPad.

So you figure everything would be "cool" running the CPU at 100C, then? Would you happily run your own ThinkPad at that temperature?

Wow, lots of replies. Thanks again, and to clear up, yeah, I was talking about the effect of temp on ALL parts of the thinkpad, because I already know the max temp on the core 2 duo, and I was worried about the cpu, the mobo, pcie, etc. Thanks guys!
