Hello,
I've a complete oldie compared to the new fangled x40s recently, but I'd imagine that one day you might have a similar problem if you've used your laptop as much as I have.
Has anyone had problems with their LCD remaining black after opening the lid? Actually what will happen is that it will come back on for 2 seconds at battery-level brightness and then go black again.
I have figured out a solution, albeit very inconvenient: After opening the lid, I press the little button that shuts off the screen (tiny nub next to the power button), then in the instant the monitor flashes, I quickly unplug then plug the laptop back in. It seems to remind that the computer is plugged in, so the lcd brightens to the regular level and finally remains on.
I've had this problem for months now, but I want to try to really fix it to pass the computer on to my younger sister. The computer is near impossible to use without being plugged in--you'd have to sit there for 20 minutes futzing with the little button until the LCD stays on. If you've had this problem, how did you fix it?
And my final question is: WHO can fix problems like this? It doesn't seem like there are IBM dealers or stores you can take or sendthe computer to. My laptop is way beyond warranty anyway. I live in Los Angeles, so if anyone has any tips please let me know. Thanks!
Sandra

Same problem, need help
I have a 600x with same issue, except I cant even get your fix to work. I can toggle w/ Fn-F7 but bright screen only lasts for 2 sec then goes black. LCD will also go bright when I push in the screen close "button" next to ESC button.
Can use external but dont want to at times.
Any suggestions? Help!!

What bios version do you have? I recall reading somewhere that a particular bios version for the X21 would cause this problem. Consider upgrading your bios and embedded controllers to the latest version.
