This is directly from the OE Help section regarding file backup:

"To compact and back up e-mail folders

1. Select an e-mail folder.
2. On the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Compact.
3. To back up the folder, find the folder file, and then copy it to a backup folder, floppy disk, or network drive. Outlook Express e-mail folders have a .dbx extension (for example, "Sent Items.dbx")."

If you simply copy a .dbx file to a backup location, it will retain the same extension. Some third-party backup programs will attach a .bak or similar extension to backed-up files.
Regards,
Steve

Thank you very much, I had checked the help file but I looked under import and export and that told me about .csv and .wab files, neither of which backed up my email I found out the hard way.

Thanks again
