Please help!!! - X40 Rescue & Recovery password
Hi all,
I have recently got my X40 and ran into a strange problem. Here is everything in order as it happened:
1. During the setup I have been prompted by Windows for my user name. I have specified and didn't provide any password. When Windows (XP pro) started I have logged in with that user name and with no password.
2. After I Succeeded with the previous step, I decided to login with my domain credentials (certain user name and non-empty password) and start installing software.
3. While performing software installation I have been prompted by Rescue and Recovery / Rapid Restore for password and was given an option "Same as Windows password" which I selected. It accepted my input and I continued with software installation.
THE PROBLEM
4. After I started to install some more software, it showed a similar prompt again - more like change password thing, I think Without "Same as Windows password" option. I have entered the password - my windows domain password, it said it's incorrect, I cancelled it and continued with software installation.
5. Once I decided to go into BIOS configuration... I have found that Rescue and Recovery screen which loads first propted me for password and it DID NOT accept my password. I tried everything - my windows domain password, since I told Rescue and Recover to use it as a password, empty password, decreasing my windows password incrementally (thinking that it might be too long for Rescue and Recovery and it truncated it) but nothing help.
6. I tried to uninstall Rapid Restore but it didn't help either.
7. Now I have fully working machine... but I cannot go into BIOS. Any ideas how this can be reset or overcome? Please help!!!
PS - I did not go into BIOS and have not changed any passwords there.

Have you tried installing the latest version of Rescue and Recovery?

I think we're all stumped. You might want to get the recovery CD set from IBM since it looks like you can't access the preboot environment/recovery partition area to restore your hard drive.

Re: Please help!!! - X40 Rescue & Recovery password
i'm having this same problem. i can't seem to get into the bios config screen. it goes directly into the rescue restore "verify password" screen. (this is the first time i've pressed the ibm access button on boot up though ) i either don't remember setting the rescue recovery password or forgot the correct password. i was told that the rescue recovery password wasn't the winxp administrator password by ibm. i don't remember setting a supervisor password. another bit of info is that the hint offered was one used for a user for the ibm security system (ESS). ibm is sending me a set of disks but not sure if this would help. is it the bios password that is either screwed or that i forgot that i have entered?sergeid wrote: THE PROBLEM

These passwords are so confusing.. esp when one first gets these IBM computers and aren't used to it.. AT this point I'm not really sure how to help you, but for others reading who maybe getting ready to start up thier new computers for the first time.. esp the Thinkpads.. I decided to use the same password for everything and actually assigned the password to everything rather than leaving things blank.. then once i really looked close at all the security levels and passwords, I changed them as I saw fit. This really helped me not get confused. I really hope you can resolve this.. I know how frustrating it can be.. sorry.. best of luck.. I will read your info again and see if i can figure it out a bit later
There was a problem with earlier versions of RnR which shipped with the X40 that any time an admin user account was created the password sync tool in RnR would launch.
The same thing happened to me. I was installing MS Visual Studio and studio creates a few admin accounts and sets the passwords to a random value. That was the password that got sync'd, so I was then locked out.
The only fix I had was to just uninstall RnR, then download & install the latest version from the web. (Which doesn't have this problem)
You may want to launch the "Create recovery CD's" out of the Access IBM folder in the Start Menu first, so that you still have a copy of the preload recovery around since when you uninstall RnR you'll be wiping all of that out too.

What versions of RnR are affected please and how can I obtain what version I have ?Riddil wrote:There was a problem with earlier versions of RnR which shipped with the X40 that any time an admin user account was created the password sync tool in RnR would launch.
