Latest Thinkpad Software installer

#1 Post by Stingray72 » Sat Sep 11, 2004 8:24 pm

has anyone updated their Software installer to the latest version?? When it searches for drivers it will just hang there with the PktMgr.exe process in task manager at 99-100%. I'm on XP pro sp2.

Thanks.

I have SP2 installed and the newest version of Software Installer hung looking at the Wireless LAN install folder (newest driver there). I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, and I tried disabling the Wireless NIC temporarily. I finally did an uninstall and then installed the prior version. That seems to work fine. ... JDHurst

No problem here either, also with SP2. In fact all prior versions never worked for me.

Same here (though with SP1). The prior version works fine, but it says it won't be able to handle the latest InterVideo update. Anyway, I'll stick with the "old" version for now.

It seems that the newest version of Software Installer hung up looking at the folder for the IBM 11/a/b/g card Version 3.1.102.23 - filename 1xwc09ww.exe. IBM withdrew this update IIRC. Then they came out with Version 3.1.102.23 - filename 1xwc11ww.exe. The newest version of Software Installer running under SP2 works with the newest version of IBM Wireless NIC (1xwc11ww.exe).

All very complicated, especially when the versions of different releases are the same. But IBM has done an almost complete revamp of their drivers (at least for TP General and my T41) to be properly compliant with SP2. So if you want to go to SP2, be ready to update most of your drivers. I'm *not* saying the older drivers don't work - just that the new drivers work better and are properly compliant.

Old software installer

#10 Post by coolsilicon » Thu Oct 07, 2004 5:12 am

I've got a pm from a person who asked for an earlier version of the software installer since he wasn't able to find it online. I've put it here for download:

www.kuvdo.de/IBMtpi.zip

Edit: I deleted the file above since the newest update from IBM seems to work well!

Update: the latest software installer works great, at least for me. Doesn't hang any more.

Still has room for improvement, IMO.

1) During download the minimize window should not be disabled.
2) After install, it should leave the downloaded file in a compressed state.

Yes - I still cancel before downloading, download and save the drivers manually and apply them. So thus far, just using Software Installer as a checker on my personal machine, although I have performed successful updates on other machines. ... JD Hurst

I've found that zipping it leaves me with an even smaller file than at IBM, great. I still run the installer but only after being notified via email of updates.
