any chance on t23?

#1 Post by joshrob » Fri Jan 19, 2007 6:17 pm

i'm using my r60 for over a month now and generally i'm not satisfied with - unfortunately preinstalled - xp's stability (w2k is far, far better). one of my friends has mac os installed (still, not a common thing in poland) which looks and works great and i wondered if i could... and it seemed a good thing to try :)

after browsing this forum i see that mac os is not an install-and-forget system, like windows and thus i use my r60 every day and it is rather the pay-the-rent hardware, this option is out of question.

but... what do You think, what are the chances of running osx on t23 (2648-2gg) with 512MBs? worth trying?

I had it running fine on my T30 1.8 P4m, and think I had 768MB of ram.

I think the T23 with 512MB or more RAM can barely run Vista, which I believe is more demanding that OS X. So you should be fine.

According to the Tawbook, the T23 has 16MB of graphics memory, the same as the T30.

If I remember correctly my t30 had 8Mb, honestly if you just want OSX to run I'm pretty sure it will. It defaults to the 1024X768 resolution fine. I have it running on my t60 with the 128Mb graphics card and still use it runs at 1024X768, I have read about hacks to get the better resolution but for my purposes it's not worth the effort.

you're sure? it works rather slow when displaying webpages with some larger graphics, and it offers just the standard 1024x768 resolution on LCD, and only(!) 640x480 on S-VIDEO output.

honestly i can't say why i assumed it has only 4MBs... it just acts like it has only 4 :D with 16 it could easily display more pixels

There are T23 models with 1400x1050 resolution. Yours just happens to have an XGA LCD.

The only one I have is 10.4.1, I've talked to others who have later releases and like them better, but I have had no ability to make any comparisons.

Here's a desktop background I made for my t60 running OSX.

thanks.

according to this section 2A... you think putting one of the original apple-stickers from my friend on my t23 next to IBM logo will do? ;)

btw: all reply notifications keep automaticaly landing in trash (not junk!) in my thunderbird 1.5.0.9. massage filters doesn't seem to work in trash. any clue how to make it right?

So OSX works on a T23? Any idea what devices might or might not work with it? I wouldn't mind looking into a dual boot setup, perhaps.

Any direction as to where to begin with this setup would be very helpful! The forum has lots of topics but I can't figure out just where to begin...and what I really need.

Thanks!

sorry. due to my memory parity error i had to hold up all major OS changes. i can not afford myslef to and up with one bluescreened PC and other not having usable operating system.

another issue is my t23 has no dvd and a dvd from my r60 has a different interface and i'll have to borrow an usb dvd from someone.

anyway, as soon as i'll be done with this parity error (and now i'm almost sure what is causing it) i'll get back to the osx@t23 thing.

Most likely NOT. The T23s use an S3 SuperSavage video chip, and as far as I know, there are no OSX/86 drivers for it, as Apple has never released any hardware with S3 Savage based graphics inside.

I am sorry for you, but you can't install OSX on a Thinkpad T23.

OSX needs at least SSE2, but with an CPU that supports SSE3 it runs as it should.

Unfortunately, the Pentium 3 processors/Celeron processors don't have SSE2, or SSE3.

It was introduced by Intel in the first Pentium 4 models, and later.

More about SSE2, and SSE3:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE3

That is also why a T30 can run OSX (Because of it's P-4 processor), and a T23 cannot (Because of it's P-3 processor.
