t40p CPU upgrade to 2.1Ghz - 478pin or 479pin?

#1 Post by zzz » Sat Jan 20, 2007 9:06 pm

I have a t40p G1U with a 1.6Ghz Pentium M. Most likely a Banias.

Recently found this forum - lots of good info, but haven't found quite what I'm looking for (search feature doesn't seem to work at all)

I've been looking around and I believe I can upgrade the cpu to a max of 2.1Ghz Dothan, but needs to be 400Mhz FSB and more than likely stepping B1.

Does the t40 take 478pin processors or 479pin? The Intel processor spec finder shows they made both 478 and 479pin.

Thanks.

cmarti,

Ok if you've done this upgrade before, and your sig shows you are running a 2.1Ghz cpu in your t40, but you don't actually answer the question - is it 478pin or 479pin that is required?

Am i right about needing B1 stepping? or will the C0 stepping work also, but only at 400Mhz

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum! I don't have answers to your questions, but just wanted to remind you that you can probably speed up your T40p more effectively by getting a 7200rpm HDD and adding RAM. The performance gain resulting from going from1.6GHz to 2.1Ghz would unlikely be very noticeable.

Oh, perhaps you can try this. Find out the spec # of your 1.6GHz processor either by opening up your machine or with system info software, and go to Intel's processor spec finder to find out how many pins it uses. Upgrade to one with the same number of pins.

Thanks for the tip pianowizard.

I already upgraded memory from 1Gig to 2Gig (PC2700) and a newer Hitachi 5400rpm 11ms 120Gig HDD. My Previous HDD was getting full. It too was a 5400rpm Hitachi.

So the only upgrade left is the CPU.

I'm not really complaining about current performance, just that if the price is right, why not go to the max on the cpu. I want to max out this chassis if feasible.

Wonderful. The next time you need a new HDD, hopefully the 200GB 7200rpm will be available!

I just ran PC Wizard 2006 on my Dell Inspiron and it gives lots of info about the processor, including the number of pins. You can get the program (and tons of others) from majorgeeks.com.

I agree with you zzz. cmarti is being vague in his answer. Using the Search button feature of this forum with the search terms 478 and 479 and choosing Search for all terms, I found the answer you are looking for.
