Z61m Freezes on AC connect

#1 Post by reality_boy » Mon Jan 22, 2007 5:29 pm

My New Z61m has a weird hang condition, If I have been using it on battery for an hour or two, and than plug it back into AC the whole computer freezes up hard. Only a hard reboot will recover, but there is no indication that anything crashes. I have left it in this state overnight and it never recovers.

I have the following 'special' conditions:
- I have a 1GB and 512MB dim installed (special on IBM website)
- I have the 7200 rpm drive.
- I have updated to the latest bios

I have tried the following to resolve the issue, but nothing has worked:
- Uninstalled all preinstalled software except power manager, shock protection, control center, and network manager.
- Removing anything that launches at startup (no extra processes)
- Set the power profile to max savings/ max speed

I have four competing theories, and would like your feedback as to there probability and resolution:

1) Bad ground, the hang happens almost instantly when I plug in AC. Maby I have a bad ground fault, or there is a problem with a loose power connector.

2) Bad bios, maybe the latest bios is a dud, or I forgot a magic step (aka reinstalling the graphics driver)

3) Overheating, it is possible that the laptop is overheating on the battery and plugging in the AC causes a new high power mode to kick in that pushes everything over the edge.

4) memory bugs, I saw some posts about z60's having troubles with 2 memory modules installed. My memory is all factory installed but that does not mean much.

I would like to solve this without sending my laptop back to lenovo, especially since it took 2 months to get it in the first place. What is my next course of action that does not cause me to spend the next month without a laptop.

Hi David,

if i were you, i'd first check the RAM issue.

First remove the 512 module and try, then the 1gb module and try again.

I used to have the same issues while upgrading my old Z60m from 512 to 2 gigs of RAM. Finally discovered it was the Modules fault. Sent them back , had them replaced and no problems with that one any more.

Also, check some other maybe silly things, like booting up in safe mode and check this again. It might be a Win problem as well.

I have the same problem with my brand new Z61p. The machine is three weeks old and the problem was there fresh out of the box. I've got about a half dozen R50/R51 ThinkPads that get plugged and unplugged about 30 times a day a piece and never this problem.

My machine has WUXGA screen, 2gb ram 2.33 GHz processor. I've updated bios and power management drivers and switched the Catalyst from default to OpenGLGames and no joy.

I'm hoping someone has this doped out.

I cannot go into detail at the current time, but if you still have a support contract, contact technical support. They will be able to assist with this problem...

My machine is brand new, purchased from Lenovo, invoiced to me on 02/12/2007. I received it 19 days ago.

Support said, on the fourth call on the same case, "Call this number and Lenovo will swap it for a new one." I called the number and Lenovo said, "We no longer have the Z61p available, so I can swap it for a T60p, or you can call tech support. If you swap it with us, you will get full credit towards the T60p, but you won't get a WUXGA screen." I need, or think I need, at least UXGA.

I purchased 4 year depot ThinkPad protection, so my support contract ends February 11, 2011.

I wish it were as simple as you make it sound.

Feel free to contact me off thread at drwohl@drwohl.com .

Any help you can give me to guide Easyserv to giving me the help I need would be great.

Other than removing DIMMs one at a time, I'm at an end of my troubleshooting. I think it's software but I'm not sure.

It does it on a clean install of Vista as well as XP Professional... It is not software related... Contact technical support, and get it in for service
