Depends on the health of your battery. I'd highly recommend www. BatteryRefill.com I got a refilled battery from them and it lasts 2.5 hrs+

As far as Ubuntu I think it would work great. I tried it on my T21 and it was quite good. You might also wan to try xubuntu as it's better for older laptops.

I run Mandriva 2007 currently on my T21 and it does very well. I also had great success with openSUSE. Thinkpads are generally well supported by Linux.
