T42 acting wierd

#1 Post by liliggyracin » Tue Jan 23, 2007 11:12 am

Have a T-f2 that is having a hard time charging the battery and I am not sure where to go to see if it is the battery or the charger itself. I do know that after a full day of charging if I shut the laptop off it where the battery light is it stays orange even with the power completely off. I am not sure why but the battery is then completely drained in the moring. My system is still under warranty should I send it to LS or is there some other little tricks you guys have up your sleeves???

Thanks in advance.

Iggy

One thing I am not clear on. Are any lights remaining on when the ThinkPad is turned off - even when the AC adapter is unplugged? If so, it seems possible that your ThinkPad is not really shutting down. Go to Start > Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced tab, and see what the settings are under Power buttons. In particular, see what the setting is when you press the Power button on your computer.

It was and still is set to Shut-down when the power button is pressed. And yes it happens with the power cord unplugged and also with it plugged in. The only way to get it to completely loose all lights is to remove the battery and put it back in. This ones throwing me for a loop..
Also I have been charging this particular battery for about 45 minutes and it still says 29 percent available. Is it possible that my battery is the culprit?

Still unsure sorry for the double post but I did make sure that the unit was completely powered off. Without the Battery in all lights stay off. With the battery remaining in place and the power cord removed the battery light remains orange and never shuts off untill the battery is completely drained. I am at a loss. Any ideas.

Also when charging I am getting a charge rate of 1025 mW and a capacity gain of 80Mwh Seems to me it would be a little faster considering the only thing running is Batterymon. Im still unsure as to what the problem might be.

Thanks

Iggy

Have you checked the terminals on the battery and on your laptop, it could be dirt is causing this strange behaviour.

Or

the battery is to blame, return it to Lenovo

or

your mobo has gone nuts, replacement needed

When have you first noticed this behaviour, did you do something to your laptop before it happened?

TBH I dont know what was being done before this problem occured. I have about 540 IBM and about 140 thinkpads that I work on. And the techs always bring them in saying. I was just using it normal and all of a sudden... Anyway. I have rebuilt with XP pro and nothing else and the problem seems to be there to start. I am going to put a call in with TS and see what they think about replacing the MOBO. I did end up trying another battery and another AC adapter with nothing helped there. We still have 2 years left on the warranty and I am thinking of just letting them Deal with it :P Will let you know what they say.

Thanks!!

I doubt if it is a battery problem. I suppose it could be a motherboard problem, but I would tend to suspect a software problem first. Yet, if you did a fresh install of the Windows, that would tend to rule that out. By chance do you have a set of Product Recovery Discs that you can use to reinstall the original Factory image?

This may not prove anything, but what if you boot up with a bootable CD such as PC Doctor for DOS, then turn your T42 off. Does the light still stay on? You can also run PC Doctor diagnostics. Maybe something will show up.

Yeah I thought of that. Booted to a Booted to a recovery cd and shut off from their as well. Nothing changed. Light still stayed on. So out of desperation I called IBM after getting disconnected 3-4 times I got mad and mashed the 0 key on the keypad about 10 times and I hear a voice. Now transfering you to hardware support :) Finally a voice. After speaking with him and explaining what I had done he tells me to reload windows. After explaining to him that I am not an idiot and that I have done that already he puts me on hold *not even hold music :(* and comes back online. Wants me to pull the battery and start up with just the AC cord (have done that already but humored him) then he wanted me while the computer was running to put the battery back in. So I did then I shut down and guess what problem was still there. Then of all things he accuses me of not doing what he said exactly. I was furious at this point :banghead: when he then again asks to put me on hold. 20 seconds later a lady comes on the line apologizes for the last technician. Asks me the problem. Said she has seen this 1-2 times before and it is actually the connection between the MOBO and the battery itself and that if cleaning didnt work it would need to be replaced. She sent me a box and I will be shipping it in today or tomorrow depending on when the box gets to me.

Thanks for everyones help I appreciate it.
:thumbs-UP:
