I finally broke down and allowed Windows Update to install the "recommended" IE7 upgrade. I noticed two things as a result.
* Booting the computer takes significantly longer now. The "Checking the Security Chip" message that used to display for less than 10 seconds now gets displayed for about a minute. Note that this does not necessarily mean checking the security chip takes that long -- some other lengthy processes are probably taking place while the message is being displayed.
* An odd incident occured: After using IE7 for a while, running some web pages that were using Java 1.5.10 (I had to allow in an "unblock" dialog), I got something never seen before: A warning that the Active Protection System chip was defective. Odd indeed. Rebooted and the APS started working again with no hint of problem. BTW, does anyone know whether APS use the Java 1.4.x runtime that is preinstalled on the system?
Other than that, and the known IE7 usability issues, it seems to work just fine.

I have IE7 running on my T41 with no particular issues. I have the Active Protection System (Hard Drive Protection - Right?) and IE7 does not interfere with that. Further, I now have Sun Java 1.6 running and APS is running fine. So I don't think your issue is an IE7 issue (even though it occurred when you installed IE7).

I agree with Jdhurst. I have IE7 and Java 1.5.10 installed and am having no problems whatsoever with the APS. I do have the security chip disabled in the bios with the security software not installed.

When I had IE6 and the security chip enabled with security software installed it took an extra minute to boot which is why I disabled the unneeded (by me) security chip.

Actually, the sensor is on the motherboard (at least it is on my T41). I can imagine, however, that a hard drive error could cause APS and other problems. So I can see why a hard drive replacement would fix the hard drive errors.

I have a solution, uninstall IE7 to revert back to IE6 and get Firefox. The only thing that IE is needed for is Windows (Microsoft) Update. Otherwise Firefox is the browser to use. I do have IE7 only because my computers automatically downloaded it and installed it, and it ran fine so I didn't bother to uninstall.

I use a combination of Firefox and IE7 on my X31, mostly the former. No issues whatsoever after installing IE7, though I still use Firefox more.

This is for HP all-in-one printers.

There is a work around and HP is supposed to be working on a fix.

HP Director for my scanner won't run either. I don't use it and don't need it, but now I know why not. Thank you, ... JD Hurst

For all those who want to use Firefox (that is the only browser I use) I just wanted to be sure you are aware of the nifty IETab add-on that you con install from the Mozilla site that puts a neat IE tab on your toolbar. If you are on a website that demands IE, just click this tab and it renders the page in IE. Works like a charm. You can also regulate which website addresses to always open in IE in IETab Options, so far the only ones I have in there are Windows site pages and YouTube. For some reason, videos aren't playing smoothly in Firefox.

Strange. YouTube works fine in Firefox on all my computers. Make sure to update Flash player for Firefox to make the videos play correctly. Also, most downloads on Microsoft site that need WGA will now work on Firefox because M$ has finally made the plugin for checking Windows available for FF, but you will need IE (or IETab) for Windows Update. That is if you manually update like I do so M$ can't install some BS software without me knowing

I noticed the same thing. I also can't print shipping labels from DHLs website. The print out the label blank for some reason but if I print it to Adobe PDF, it comes out fine.

Thanks for the suggestion Stargate. I did update to Flash 9 (??) but it still happens. I will be watching a video and then it will suddenly freeze and not load in, then suddenly start. I did research on Google and found tons of messageboards where many people had the same problem. It is not an issue with IE6, the videos load right in and play without a hitch.
