Hello from a new T41 owner

#1 Post by Grim » Wed Jan 24, 2007 11:50 am

Just saying hello really. It's fun being a newbie, knowing the tens of thousands of posts on other forums, mean absolutely nothing - apart fromt he fact you know how to behave on forums.

Just got a T41 after my old compaq E500 killed it's hinge

I use it for "social computing", as apparently if I go upstairs and use my PC, that's "antisocial". Initially i bought a fujitsu laptop, which had a lovely widescreen, a dvdrw and a 100gig drive. but it was faulty, so went back.......... and I end up with the IBM which doesn't have a big screen, doesn't have a dvdrw and has a teeny 40gig (or maybe only 30 and a bit) drive. but it works:wink: and it has more ram.

the big suprise for me is the lack of the windows key - although I have seen the registry hacks, and will sort that out.

I was planning on chucking in a bigger hdd, as the compaq has a 60 that's spare. bit more searching on here for the procedure for doing that with the hidden partition thingy

dvd rw - jeepers they are expensive. may just sit and watch ebay for a cheepy, or maybe just get a usb one. I've burnt very few dvd - ever, so maybe that's something i really don't need (I could always go upstairs  )

only real gripe, is the mains cable is pretty short - but that's not unsolvable

I haven't abused it much yet, but it seems to play most of my favorite games pretty well (age of mythology being the current favorite) , although I don't expect the graphics to keep up with my PC, the ram seems to cope with playing against several AI opponents.

anyway, looks like a great forum, so Hello from the UK.

Welcome to the forum! You may be happy to know that not only are the RAM and hard drive upgradeable, but the processor is as well! It really is a wonderful machine, so enjoy it!

Yep the T41 packs a punch, ibm components are more looked into than that of general laptops which contain oem parts, another game which works beautifully and im serious here, is the need for speed carbon, i get chromes, effects, everything running at 40+ fps, dvdrw's are expensive as ibm brand them and modify the casings to accomodate fast device switching, you can pick up a reasonable second hand uj822 for about 70 bucks on ebay, or if you prefer brand new then $120.00 will answer the question with the standard one year ibm warranty, your first upgrade should be the hdd, go for something 7200rpm if you can,

Welcome to the forums! Most people here are great and are easy to get along with. As a T41P owner myself let me just say that your T40 should serve you well. IBM machines are truly in a class of their own and typically outlive their counterparts by years.

You can get the windows key function using the IBM keyboard utility. I get it to map the right ALT key as a windows key.

It should be in your control panel or under the Access IBM menu under Start | Programs

well dvd arrived DOA, and posting it back to the US, and only being refunded on the drive and not carriage, means i am down on the deal.

ohh the joys of fleecebay.....

however my 160gig is sitting here ready to go, but now i don't appear to have a service partition.

although the 40gig drive is only reporting 33.91gig drive, so 7 has gone somewhere.

access ibm only gives some basic boot options, nothing to transfer they service partition, or restore.

so looks like it's a new xp install, download some drivers, and then forget the blue button. ho hum.

annoying that a feature of the computer isn't there though.

If the restore partition is there you may be able to restore its functionality. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62978

Short mains cable

My new T41's power cable is a bit short, too. I scrounged a much longer one from my recently dead HP ScanJet 6200C.
