First company purchase of the X60

We have recently just purchased 6 Lenova x60 tablets and I am curious how easy it is to load drivers for. Reason I ask is we like to Dump the original copy of XP that was shipped and put our own on with nothing added. Drivers seem to be easily gotten from IBM/Lenova but has anyone else had any problems doing something similar??

I guess the X60 tablet is so new that very few forum members own one at this point and you probably won't get a response from an actual X60 tablet owner for a while. But I have owned over 20 Thinkpads and almost always install my own copy of XP and download all drivers from Lenovo's site, and have never had problems. XP most likely won't have drivers for your networking devices, so right after installing XP, download the driver for your ethernet port or wireless card on another computer and transfer it to the tablet to activate these devices, so that you can connect to the internet and download the Software Installer, which will then download and install the remaining drivers for you, semi-automatically. An even easier way to do it is, plug in an old PCMCIA ethernet card for which WinXP has drivers and can install automatically, and download Software Installer through that connection.

That was going to be my guess. I havent had any problems with any other models getting drivers etc etc (darn ethernet never comes across) but thats a minor glitch. Thanks for your input. Now I have to wait for the darn DVD drives we ordered to ship out *.$

I just bought one for my company as well and want to wipe off everything that is on it.

We've got a sitewide XP license, can I use that to put on or do I need to specifically get the Tablet version of XP?

That is something that I was going to ask as well. I havent started to load the XP Pro Version on these yet but I have heard that it wont work correctly and that I would need a Tablet Version of XP in order for it to work.

Anyone tried XP Pro yet or am I going to be the first candidate to try it out

I would suggest that you just do a system restore. The newer Lenovo machines allow you to restore the system to the factory default with a little twist. After telling the software to restore the hard drive to factory defaults you'll be given the option to select what software to restore. At that point you can pick and choose what is loaded on your system.

Finding drivers is easy enough.. The driver matrix exists for the tablet, so that's no problem. Same thing as every other ThinkPad, really tho.. If you plan to wipe the preload and install your own image, it's a very good idea to save the \swtools directory. That has all the driver and software installers for the programs that are on the preload. Faster and easier than downloading, and if you're using a media slice with DVD player/burner, then the installers for that software will be in there, too. Only updates are available outside the preload.

Well as promised I am going to report back. Loading standard XP Pro works fine on the tablet if you never want to use any tablet features. What I ended up doing was just cleaning all the crap off that I didnt want loaded. Installing the programs I did want making sure it all works. Ran Sysprep for XP pro (worked for Tablet Edition) and then used Symantec Ghost to make a ghost image so I only have to do this once

I have successfully ghosted our X60s and I am happy. Xp tablet edition is neccesary for all the functions of the tablet to operate properly. I did however remove a lot of IBM security junk as it just seemed to be a pain in the butt instead of helpfull.

As a cool little side note, all of my X60 tablets have an added feature when I use F11 and do "restore to factory contents." You have the option of doing a custom restore and given a list of programs that will be installed. All you have to do is scroll through, find the ones you don't want and uncheck them. Boom. Insta-modified preload w/o the stuff you don't want even installed.

Hey nice!! I will have to give that a shot when our next shipment of X60s come in. Although I already have a ghost image that will work I want to give that a shot to just see how it works!! Thanks for the input mephie!!!!!!
