802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI Card

#1 Post by davidashaw » Mon Sep 13, 2004 12:21 am

Hi,
I'm a bit confused. I ordered an 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI Card off of eBay. I thought I was getting model number IBM 31P9701, however when I received the card, it had a bar code label on the outside that read "MADE IN TAIWAN" with a number indicating 91P7405. It looks like an IBM part number, however I cannot find it on the IBM website. The card itself says "PHILLIPS" and indeed, it is an 802.11a/b/g Mii-PCI card. Also on the card itself, it indicates (FRU P/N 91P7301 YEAR/MONTH 401. I asked the seller if this card had the Altheros Chipset and he stated "yes". My question is, did I get the correct upgrade card for my T40p? Could the part number on the outside of the bag have been a mistake?
Thanks,

David

David,

IBM's parts numbers can be confusing, to say the least.

You have the correct card http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... MIGR-52626, same one I have in my T40.

James,
Thanks for your reply. I'm glad that I have the correct card. I haven't installed it as yet, however I am curious as to how satisfied you and others are with the card. I've been reading on the forum that the IBM 802.11b/g card is the more reliable and trouble free card.

I'm very curious to know as well if you are satisfied with this card. I currently have the 802.11 a/b card but also use a pcmcia card to take advantage of my 802.11g router (which is kind of cumbersome).

Thanks for the input.

I also upgraded from a/b card to a/b/g in my T40p.
The a-band reception (Netgear FWAG114 AP) is much better, but it could just be the newer Access Connection/WinXP SP2 reporting a higher connection speed.

Being able to use g-band to connect to my AP is also a big plus when I am out-of-range with the a-band.

All in all, I am happy with the upgrade, though i don't know if it is worth $100.

I'm very happy with the IBM a/b/g card in my T40. It works very well with my LinkSys 11b and 11g routers here at home and I am seldom disappointed with it's operation when I'm on the road.

I also am very happy with my a/b/g card. I swear 99% of problems with the wireless cards can be attributed to user error (or not having updated drivers).
