You could go into Display -> Appearances and customize it to mostly black and white. Since most people wanted colour (as far back as the early 80's) for their PC's, it is pretty much built in now.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

You should be able to change the desktop properties to get that color (or, non-color) scheme. Assuming you are using XP, right-click the desktop, select Properties, click on the Appearence tab, drop down the Color Scheme box and select High Contract White, click the Apply button.

That will change most of the windows and desktop to black and white. You then have to change other components of the windows by using the Advanced tab in the Properties box you have just opened.

This will not get rid of any colors that each application uses or browser displays. I don't know of any way you can automatically alter the graphics in the browser to show black and white (or greyscale).

thanks for your ideas

i guess the next question is, is there a way to get a color monitor to go b/w?

the high contrast white works for windows itself but i want everything b/w.

Just an idea mind you. Perhaps you could take an S-Video cable and remove pin 4, or cut the wire to pin 4, then plug one end in your ThinkPad, and the other end into a TV. Alternatively, I suppose it is possible that there is some software that would accomplish this for you.

another good option but i'm wanting to run b/w in the family desktop and not in my TP.

there's got to be a way to get the windows display to be monochrome, right?

I don't know of one (others might). There was a fix years ago for the VGA card to put out mono to a monochrome graphics monitor, but that was near 20 years ago and I haven't seen anything like it since. ... JD Hurst

Right -- I think Windows 3.x had a monochrome VGA driver, but most likely that wouldn't do much good for you.

But a special driver (or driver option) is really what you need. It might be worth your while to check out the Omega drivers:

And their support forum here:

Angel Trinidad, who maintains the Omega drivers, is well respected and could well be able to have (or point you to) a solution.

I want to know this too - I even posted a thread about this sometime ago: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=34296
If any of you guys come across a solution, please post it here.
