Upside-Down HD in T41 ??
Upside-Down HD in T41 ??
I just pulled out the HD in this T41 that I got for my wife a couple days ago.
Relative to thousands of HD's I've seen over the past 20 years, it sure looks to me like the HD mounts "upside down" in this laptop !!
Is that true for the T41, or am I mistaking which surface is "top" on this HD ??
fyi, this is a Toshiba MK6022GAX, and it is also labeled with 'Compaq' and a part#.....so I'm assuming it was originally out of a Compaq laptop. It's the drive that came in this used T41.
Over the past 20 years, I've seen many many HD-specs which said specifically NOT to mount the drive upside-down. Is that no longer part of the spec for recent laptop-drives like this one?
Or are the Compaq drives made "backwards" to make them "proprietary" ??
(this is the drive that's making that intermittent loud howling/squealing noise).
thanks!

This is normal, all T4x series HDD are connected to the motherboard upside-down. I also wondered why too, when I tried to connect a old Hitachi 20GB HDD on my T42p upside-down it refused to be recognized by the BIOS. I don't think it affects performance.

*Anyone know where moderator Christopher wolf has gone to? He has not been in the forum since 19 Jan 2007. Maybe he can help to explain about this weird T4x series HDD installation to us* He is very well informed.
Look forward to reading christopher's reply.

I think it may have to with the Accelerometer feature which shuts down the headers of the HDD. Wonder how's the HDD positioned on a T60

It is turned upside down, to reduce the heat coming into the palmrest and provide it with other pathways to dissipate the heat away.
Also there is a layer of metal which absorbs heat even on the back side ( i.e the top )
If someone has a Dell D600 / Inspiron 600m and a T4x series you would notice the difference in the heat on the palmrest. The hardrive orientation and heat removal design around it attribute to the difference.
This was one of the main reasons of lot of hard drive failures in the Dells.
You can refer my review / suggestions done almost 3.5 years ago in a dell forum.
