Decreasing sensitivity of Active Protection

#1 Post by zamane » Sun Jan 28, 2007 1:25 pm

Hi. I usually use my T42 on a tablemate which is quite light such that it tilts even with the smallest touch. This becomes annoying when for example watching a film on laptop because Active Protection System keeps pausing the harddisk if I slightly touch the tablemate.

I noticed that the shock detection sensitivity was at High so I changed it to Low and the annoying problem is now over. However, now I am in doubt whether this lower sensitivity will protect the laptop from most shocks? Am I giving too much away for convenience?

I know I could use a sturdier table to put the laptop on, but let's just say that's not an option.

Having knocked my T41 wide open and running onto the floor a couple of years ago, I am most happy that (1) I have hard drive protection and (2) I run it on High. I appreciate your issue, but there are no circumstances whatever including yours that I would lower the sensitivity. ... JD Hurst

I've had the exact same issue, while watching a movie on a bus. Easy solution - turn it to "low" (or even "off") when it's bothering you, turn it back on "high" again, when it can't bother you (most of the time I assume).

However, your situation is strange. It must be one heck of an unstable tablemate, if just touching it gives the effect I get from riding a bus with it in my lap.

Thanks for the advice. I accept there is a little bit of exaggeration in my description, but really it is at a point where I really have to pay attention when touching the table or the laptop in order not to pause the HD.

I also have T41 but I don't find any options to set the sensitivity, it's either "enabled" or "disabled"...where do I look?

Start, Programs, Thinkvantage, Active Protection System.
Then adjust the shock detection sensitivity slider. At least that is how it works on my T42.

Hmm..

On my T41P there is no slider. Just a check box for ignoring frequent bumps like when riding in a car.

Yep...same here...but I would like to have the option to set the sensitivity, I often have to turn it off when using on plane or in my lap...

I'm experimenting something similar. I must move between two cities 100 miles away (2 hours trip each way), And I've prefered do it in bus, and use the time to do my computer stuff (programming and customer contacts by cell phone). I feel annoyed with that thing stopping all time and I've set it as low and ignoring frequent bumps. The highway is in good condition, it's just the matter of the movement inside a 3 meter tall bus. I do it 3 days per week.

Can this damage it? When set at high the matter its really disturbing. Anyways, the price of information stored there is more valuable.

surely it's not an antivibration system, but a "ohh f*** i just dropped my laptop" protection.

the machine detects it is moving, and could have been dropped, so it parks the heads.

shaking it from side to side will trigger this, but is not going to damage the disk.

it is not parking the heads because you have reached a dangerous vibration/g force, but that a dangerous g force will be reached if it hits the floor.

so as long as you don't drop it, then the it can be turned off, making it no worse than any other laptop, not fitted with the system (99.94%, according to research)

if you are watching films, with it in your lap, and setting off the detection, maybe you are watching the wrong films
