want to get cardbus usb 2.0 adaptor to work

#1 Post by dunk » Sun Jan 28, 2007 2:40 pm

i'm trying to get a startech cbusb220 usb 2.0 cardbus adaptor to work in a thinkpad t21 running xp home sp2. i've done a fresh install of winsdows. the system detects the adaptor and some devices work when plugged into it but some don't. i've gotten an ide enclosure to work at 2.0 speeds (using chkdsk as a benchmark) but when i try it with a sata enclosure i get the message "usb device not recognized". i also tried a cuzer micro flash drive and got the same error. i've tried these devices in other computers and they work fine. any ideas? thanks.

Did you install the drivers for the cardbus adapter? I know that when I bought my USB 2.0 cardbus adapter on eBay, I had to install the drivers for it. Maybe that is your problem.

according to startech i don't have to install drivers for xp. in fact the installation cd has only one file on it, a setup.exe file - presumably for 98.

is there any way to distinguish what kind of devices work, and which don't.

for example i once had a broken card which crashed when usb2 devices were plugged in. but worked fine with usb 1 devices, which is annoying for a usb2 card (but clearly not the same as your problem)

In my exiperence of these pcmcia cards they don't have engouth power for some usb devices. for this reason some cards have a extra cable to plug into a PS/2 port for extra power.

Is is possible that your card doesn't have engouth power for the devices you are trying to use ?

to test this you could try using a powered usb 2 hub to see if this solves your problem.

yeah the power problem may have somthing to do with it except that one of the devices that fails is a little cruzer micro flash drive that i wouldn't expect to draw much power. i'll see about trying a powered hub. thanks

Check the chip brand of the USB card. In general, the NEC chips work best. Perhaps you can exchange that card?
Has you laptop a 16- or 32-bit PCMCIA slot?
32-bit cards don't work in a 16-bit slot.

I have a T23 (with XP-Pro/SP2), use an 'SDK' USB 2.0 Cardbus adapter with NEC chips.
It works great.
I also use Sandisk Cruzer Mini USB sticks without problems in both laptop-USB and adapter-USB2 ports without any problems.

i have used mini flash usb drives with hubs before and some use alot of power (surprisingly).

so it is very possible that if power is your problem, that a usb flash drive might not work.
