Anti-virus not working on Vista

#1 Post by phil81uk » Mon Jan 29, 2007 10:03 am

Hello.

I am sure everyone is aware that the Norton anti-virus supplied with thinkpads using XP does not work with vista, so currently I have no anti-virus. Can anyone fill me in on whether Lenovo will make available a new anti-virus which I could download and install on my Fresh Vista installation (not an upgrade)?

Or is it a case (like with Dell), that if you wipe the factory installation then softwares like the Anti-virus are not available to you?

One option is you could bite the bullet and get the built-in 'OnceCare' from MS for $19.95 for 3 PCs for a year.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=79433

It is much better integrated into Vista than Symantec and uses less resources IMHO as it is aware of prioritized I/O etc.

I find it very unlikely that Lenovo will post any updated Norton. You might find an update on the Norton site though.

That is useful to know. I dont like giving Microsoft any money, but I may do this.

Is Noran Antivirus available for download on the Lenovo site? I've looked but cant find it.

Norton is not available on Lenovo's site that I have seen. It only comes with the factory preload, and on the Product Recovery Disc set. Chances are, that if you want a Vista compatible version of Norton, you will probably have to pay for it - at least until ThinkPads begin shipping with a Vista and you buy one of these ThinkPads.

I seem to recall talking to Symantec about Client Security (Corporate Product) recently and they said they would be issuing Vista updates for their products. I am not pushing any one A/V product (use whatever you wish), but for those many folks waiting before upgrading to Vista, Norton will have updates sometime soon.

And I don't need any flames about this post. Symantec Client Security (Corporate) is a strong product that is highly protective and uses very little resource. I never notice it running and it is always up-to-date. It is now showing up on Lenovo Desktops.

You could always download and install AVG, which is free, until an updated version of your favourite anti-virus is released.

Hi. AVG is only free for 32bit machines. A friend recommended Avast (also free). It seems to be working.

PS I also took up my banks anti-virus software (most UK banks offer free antivirus to online banking customers - for obvious reasons!). But that too didn't work on Vista.

Thank you

So I take it you've got Vista 64bit installed?

Symantec products are the absolute WORST of the AV world. Get aVast or some other 64-bit program. LOTS of them are free and work just as well as Symantec's. If not better (i.e. less CPU and disk usage).

People have always said this to me. But Symantec is integrated with the IBM Away manager so I kept using it. But I must admit, I've had a situation where Symantec didn't find any virus' on my girlfriends computer. After time spent not figuring out what was making the computer misbehave I installed AVG, and alas, it found virus' which Symantec had not!

I HIGHLY recommend ESET's NOD32..

it works flawlessly and has been approved for vista..
works on my T60p running vista and there is a free trial available..
small footprint and smooth operation..
its what I use on ALL thinkpads and desktops..

this works so smoothly i can't believe it.. :)

I have, according to this forum, two computers that don't work. I keep wondering how I get so much done. After some work though, I found the answer. My integrated product (that runs at zero CPU 99 percent of the time; that uses a normal amount of memory; that runs trouble free and silently all the time; that is silently up-to-date daily; and that protects against any attempted intrusion or virus attack) was mislabled. It is an unknown brand X and not Symantec Corporate after all.

Thanks for the smarta$$ response.

Did you ALSO know that your Symantec product may have a rootkit on it?

To the best of my knowledge, they are the ONLY AV company that has ever put a root kit in a "security" product.

With security companies like this, who need hackers.

If a company will put it in one product, why on EARTH should they be trusted on any other product?

The Symantec Corporate product is as different to the Consumer product as black is to white. The programs are different and the support people are different. There is no reason to believe the Corporate product is root-kitted and in fact, I downloaded a root kit detector about a half-year ago and ran it on my computers. No root kits found.

They are ALL owned by the same company. That is all that matters to 99.99999% of us.

Plus, I get just as good (or better) protection FREE.

I'm with JD on this one... the only good Symantec scanner is the Corporate one because it is much more lightweight than the consumer tools.

Both work, but as which one uses more resources... no question.
