My apologies, that advice might not be sound, if your Ultrabay performs as slowly in your machine as it does in my T61p, search for "how darn SLOW" here:Saberx, something to consider. If you're able to put an Intel 80GB solid state drive into your IPS equipped laptop, you'll be booting/working dramatically faster too, somewhat affordably ($650ish). But you'd need to fill that UltraBay with a big HDD for D: drive too, since I suspect 80GB is too small to be your only storage....

Hmm, nevermind, Ultrabay can perform after all, with an SSD anyway:

Thanks but as much as i like the A31P thinkpad. I dont think i'll be buying a $650.00+ SSD drive for it.tinkererguy wrote:Saberx, something to consider. From your sig, I noticed you have that IPS panel, which is a superior screen with amazing viewing angles: enjoy it!
I fully realize just how fortunate I am. For me, this W700 is a both a tool I make my living with, and a toy I like to "tinker" with.
If anything it will go into the Dell i have.
I really hate to say it but i like this Dell just a little better then the A31P.
The A31P has the IPS lcd for the viewing angles BUT the colors and screen quality is the same or better on the Dell.As of now my main driver is this Dell. Until i can save up the cash for a nice X60 or T60 with close specs as this Dell.

Re: Your Vista Performance Scores
My parents purchased a new Compaq Presario CQ60 (they were on a budget and wanted to buy new, so I couldn't quite persuade them to go for anything else) and this is what the scores are for the machine (running Home Premium):
Processor Genuine Intel(R) CPU T1700 @ 1.83GHz 4.8
Memory (RAM) 2.00 GB 4.4
Graphics Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family 3.2
Gaming graphics 797 MB Total available graphics memory 3.4
Primary hard disk 109GB Free (138GB Total) 5.2
Does what they need it to do, so I guess it's a good buy

ThinkPad in my signature,
OS: Win 7 Ultimate x64 beta build 7000 (I hope you won´t throw me out because of the OS
)
processor (calculations per second): 5.4
RAM (operations per second): 5.4
graphics (desktop performance for windows aero): 4.2
gaming graphics (3D business and gaming graphics performance): 4.2
primary hard disk (data transfer rate): 3.0 (for 7K200) and 5.9 (for 7200.3)
I use 7K200 as my main HD because apart from any raw transfers the system simply runs faster than with the 7200.3 (go figure)! Yet, this doesn´t explain the huge score difference between both. I believe the article Engineering the Windows 7 “Windows Experience Index” explains where such differences arise from.
The other interesting point is the RAM score. With Vista I believe I had about 4.8 or 4.9, now I have reached the amazing 5.4 Maybe, time has come when the dual channel and the HyperX memory started making sense (I don´t believe my own words....).
For graphics I use the latest ATI driver from Lenovo.

Re: Your Vista Performance Scores
I'm trying to get a Thinkpad that can run Vista, in my opinion I like the services and features of Vista over 7. I plan to stick with Vista for awhile, although the hardware requirements of 7 are a bit more realistic.
But I will throw out my current work laptop:
Revolution: Toshiba Satellite A305-S6916 Special Edition
Processor, Intel Core 2 Duo w/ Centrino:------------------------5.1
RAM, 4 GB SDRAM:------------------------------------------------5.2

Gaming Graphics, ATI Mobility Radeon 3650 HD with 512MB:-5.2
Primary HD, Western Digital 320 GB running 5200 RPM:-------5.4
Vista score WEI: 5.1

Re: Your Vista Performance Scores
Currently re-installing my A31 at the moment due to a HDD upgrade (20 GB to 40 GB). After christmas I shall buy an extra HDD caddy for the A31 that goes into the ultrabay thing, which means I'll be able to use another 40GB HDD. I will probably also upgrade the RAM from 768MB to 1GB or slightly over using 2x 512MB RAM chips...
This now means that I'll be able to upgrade from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate, like I have on my ThinkCentre...these will probably be my specs after Xmas and when I'm ready to upgrade...
2x 40GB HDD's
processor 1.6, intel pentium 4
RAM: probably just slightly over 1GB
The copy of Vista Ultimste I have is an upgrade copy, which means to install it you have to go into your current OS and install it from there. Will probably be installing in around April/May time as I have just put Vista on my Thinkcentre (came with XP pro) and you have to wait something like 6-8 months before you can install again.
Now here's the question...!!
Will Vista work well on my specs (above)??
I meet all the minimum requirements for Ultimate editon...!!
But then again I don't think you can download drivers for Win Vista for my laptop (A31)...
Does anybody on here own an A31 running Windows Vista?? If so and it works fine, please can you let me know!!
...will just say to anyone considering Windows Vista it was really good on my pc!! Windows 7 is just like Vista actually so I wouldn't upgrade from Vista to 7 YET, maybe when 7 gets older then use upgrade, but I actually prefer Vista to XP...
Thanks!
