email provider options
email provider options
i'm getting increasingly worried about google/gmail's 'storage' practices and looking for something a bit more private, even if it costs money.
i need a provide that:
a) is stable and not likely to disappear anytime soon
b) provides email as a stand-alone service (not tied to a $9.99 dial-up service i will not be using)
c) provides decent storage potential
i've been looking into hushmail.com but i'm not sure who they are/how stable the company is.
any other options?
TIA

inbox.com offers 5GB storage, POP and SMTP (no IMAP though). I tested it for a while and it was very reliable. There seems to be no advertisement attached to send or received mails.

What do you mean by this? I've been using Gmail since not long after it first came out, and I have no complaints or worries...little a wrote:i'm getting increasingly worried about google/gmail's 'storage' practices

i too really like gmail and find it very convenient. as a student of history, however, this kind of perverse keeping of records is really scary.

buy a domain for email
Buy your own domain at godaddy.com or 1&1.com. less than $10/year. Godaddy has great support and an easy interface to control your account.
Earthlink has a $9.95/month option if you already have an ISP.
Why would anyone pay $9.95 a month for an email address? Their spamblocker is awesome. I set it to only allow email through from contacts in my address book.
Email from anyone not in my address book gets dumped into a suspect mail folder. They get a polite email advising them that the account is protected by spamblocker and offering a link to generate an allowed sender request that includes an automated Turing test. If they pass the test I get an email stating that so and so wants to be added to my address book, and I get to choose.
Once a day (or once a week or month or never if I set it up that way) I get an email from Earthlink listing the senders and subject lines of new suspect mail, and if I'm expecting something I can scan to see if it is there. If I want to look at the suspect mail folder or move items from it to my inbox I just login to their webmail.
There are other email clients that have similar features but most of them run on the client machine. The nice thing about Earthlink's system is it all runs on their server.
Bottom line is that I get zero spam. I have almost forgotten what a pain it was a couple years ago deleting dozens of spams per day. That's worth $9.95/month to me.
Earthlink also throws in a bunch of other free software - firewall, security suite, etc. but I already have my own.

can you explain the connection between email addys and domains? would i have to pay for a service to upkeep my email as well? or would the domain registration include my email addys?workproven wrote:Buy your own domain at godaddy.com or 1&1.com. less than $10/year. Heres a question:
I have an email address associated with my website, mike (at) frattaroli (dot) us. Is there any decent web mail service which will allow me to keep that address but go through their service and servers?

I also use Earthlink, but I also have DSL with them. I am well pleased with their service. You can download POP3 email with your email client or check it via Earthlink's Webmail if you are not at the computer you want to download to. If you use a WWAN card like Cingular, Verizon, or T-Mobile, you can use Earthlinks SMTP authenticated server to send email from your email client. Not all email providers offer this. If you do not have access to an SMTP authenticated server, you will not be able to send email from your email client when you are not using your home dialup, DSL, or Cable connection. You can still probably send email via webmail, but that is inconvenient IMO.egibbs wrote:Earthlink has a $9.95/month option if you already have an ISP.

I use a private vendor in Toronto. Shell Access; POP Mail; Web Access; SpamAssassin; Greylisting; and some tech tools. It costs me 90 dollars per year and support is minimal (you need to know what you are doing and probably want to be using Outlook or similar. I pay another 25 dollars per year for email forwarding through Mail.com. The whole thing costs me 10 dollars a month and I am happy. Greylisting is recent and I am down to 1 spam in the last 45 days. This is a level not seen since 1994. ... JD Hurst

Re: buy a domain for email
If you own a domain i.e. alfio.com (which will cost you $8-12/year) you can have email with that domain i.e. mail@alfio.com. Many domain registrars provide everything you need. It varies from free to $20/year (or more) depending on what you get. If you go to one of the above godaddy or 1&1 you can click around and find out about having your own domain and email addresses. They are POP3 or IMAP. You just use your email client to look it up. They also have web-based email options. I use godaddy for several domains. I am always impressed with their phone support, even when I ask stupid questions.little a wrote:can you explain the connection between email addys and domains? would i have to pay for a service to upkeep my email as well? or would the domain registration include my email addys?workproven wrote:Buy your own domain at godaddy.com or 1&1.com. less than $10/year. But a key questions is whether those ads are displayed when you read the email (like gmail) or on all the emails you send out (like hotmail). I would rather deal with the ads myself than impose them on everyone I send mail to ...
Personally, I don't think the gmail privacy issues are as serious as they are made to be. Sure, they can be subpoena'd to hand them over, but then the FBI can pound on your own door and take away your ThinkPad as well ...
