Who runs dual monitors?

I have a 19" wide screen 1440x900 with my X60s running to extend desktops and its awesome! I just set it up, since my desktop crapped out on me a few weeks ago I have had this LCD sitting on my shelf and just found a use for it. Loving this.

I telecommute and use a second monitor with my work HP Compaq nc6220 when I'm at home. When I'm in my office where I don't have the second monitor, I feel like my hands are tied.

Ditto. I can't image how I ever got much work done with just a single monitor. (I used to think it was just a gimmick)

With a desktop I've used multiple monitors for a long time. I started doing it with Win98SE, and then on W2K, but somehow had more problems with XP which for some unknown reason didn't like some of the PCI cards I used to run the secondary monitors. At that time, I was running 3 on my main rig which started out with a 19" CRT and 2 LCDs. That was great since I could use the main for Photoshop, put my palettes on one of the LCDs and have Outlook or a browser on the 3rd. Sometimes, I'd even remotely check on our servers on one while something else was working on the others.

I have a 17" CRT monitor that I use with my T23 screen via docking station. This works really well for video/audio editing as I can work on two programs at once or use the monitor as a preview screen.

I decided not to do dual monitors with my X31, and just use the external panel when I'm in the office.

Why? First, the external is 1600x1200, while the X31 display is only 1024x768, so it only adds 40% display area, and the sizes are disparate enough that moving windows across is often a hassle. The 20" external is plenty big, too.

Second, with an external monitor only I can easily use an external keyboard. With dual, I would really need to use the X31's built-in keyboard in order for the ergonomics to make sense, and then move the external 20" to be approximately in line with the X31's LCD. At that point it's huge next to the X31, and also sits about 4" higher at the bottom.

Now, with a 14" T60 and a 17-19" external this could make a lot more sense for me ...

I have been using dual monitor setups for years!

I used it a lot for college and at work it is a must! I have SXGA+ on the laptop LCD's and 19 flat panels as the second monitor!

A friend runs THREE!

He has a 37" LCD and on either side 17" widescreen LCD's. He has over $1K in video cards...and another $2K in LCD's..but it is ONE SWEET SETUP! While playing video games..just on the 37" I have to MOVE my head from left/right to see the terrain....

I use my T60 with the desktop extended into my 24" Dell LCD monitor when I want to have three or more windows displayed simultaneously, e.g. right now I have 12. The T60's 1400x1050 plus the Dell monitor's 1920x1200 add up to 3,774,000 pixels! Someday I should try using my Dell Inspiron 6000 in conjunction with the 24" monitor to get 4,608,000 pixels total!

Those must be some low-end LCD's. The 30" ACD ALONE is $2k!

Once I get back to the states, I'll be getting a new dual-display setup. I've done so for years. Used to have two 21" gray-scale CRT's back in the day (IBM fixed-frequency monitors).

I'm thinking of a Mac Pro with dual 30" ACD's...but, I think I COULD be happy enough with a setup like this

I sort of have a dual monitor setup, but it's actually dual computers. My Thinkpad sits in a dock to the left of my computer monitor. I like having the two keyboards because it lets me do work faster. I can do one of three things with this setup. I can have my thinkpad in dual monitor mode, I can run both my desktop and thinkpad on the same Keyboard, mouse, and monitor using my KVM switch, or I can the thinkpad running along with my desktop using the two simultaneously.

The 37" is a TV...Sceptre 37" LCD...he paid ~$1,800 for it...the Sony's were closeouts at around ~400 each...so over $2K...either way a lot more than I would spend to play games...

I know the video cards were around $800 each, he can run SLI...one CRAZY gamer...currently married to x-box 360....
