Embedded Security Chip Enabled (T43)?

#1 Post by margolin » Tue Jan 30, 2007 7:47 pm

Hello all,

I'm running Vista on my T43. Overall, it's running extremely well. It actually seems faster than it did with XP.

One problem I'm having though is in activating my Embedded Security Chip. In BIOS (newest version) it is activated and in Vista I have the newest driver. Nevertheless, CSS 8 reports security as being "Software Based." I don't see anywhere to tell it to activate the chip.

Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know how to activate it?

thanks

Same here. Just did a clean install of everything - Vista and all Lenovo software.

The Winbond TPM driver does not even notice when I enable or disable the chip in BIOS.

I've let Vista to search for a solution, and that's what it returned:
Windows Vista does not support NSC TPM Device

This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between Windows Vista and NSC TPM Device. This program was created by National Semiconductor.
National Semiconductor has sold the chip to Winbond (hence the change in the driver name) and seemingly nobody supports it anymore. The driver for Vista is dated 10/09/05.

We are out of luck?

It is in Client Security Solution\Security Advisor\Audit\Client Security\Activate/Deactivate Chip. It works in CSS8 on XP, but the option is missing in Vista. Also, Control Panel\Security\Bitlocker Drive Encryption reports that "A TPM was not found."

From what I understand, Bitlocker only supports 1.2 version TPM's. The one in my T43 is version 1.1. Therefore, I assume that Bitlocker won't work with the chip. Nevertheless, it seems like it should work with CSS 8, especially since it works under XP.

I hope that Lenovo hasn't dropped support of it. Especially since they were still selling T43's fairly recently.
