new t60p issues

#1 Post by Raptor47 » Wed Jan 31, 2007 8:06 pm

Well I just last week got my T60p widescreen (8741C2U), my first ever ThinkPad. Needless to say, coming from a Dell (albeit a Latitude and not an Inspiron), I'm impressed. However, I've encountered a few problems and I'm unsure how to fix them. Hopefully some of you thinkpad gurus can help me out.

First, I am wondering if the fan ever shuts off. In my experience, it has never shut off, even though the temperatures given to me by SpeedFan are extremely low and it doesn't need to be on. It doesn't really bug me that much, but in a quiet lecture hall it's definitely audible.

Second, as much as I love the biometric security, I only want to be hassled about swiping my finger on logins from standby and powering on. As it is, I turn on my machine and I log in with the fingerprint reader, then am asked again to swipe my finger after Windows has loaded. I'm not sure why this is. I'm not interested in using the biometric security on web sites so if it's possible to disable the password manager while keeping login security it would be great.

Also, I can't understand the value of the green LED indicating the UltraBay device is in. I can tell perfectly well on my own that there's a drive in there, and I don't need a light to confirm it. This wouldn't bug me so much if it would turn off while the computer is in standby, but it stays on unless the computer is completely turned off. Is there any way to get the light to turn off in standby mode?

Also, I cannot browse to some web pages. I have tried getting to some web pages in both Firefox and IE (shudder) and the operations time out. However, most sites work fine. I think it may have something to do with the sites having flash content, because that seems to be the common factor on all the sites that don't work. However, I can't get to Adobe's site to download the player, but I don't know why I wouldn't be able to see the rest of the content on the page even if I don't have the player installed.

Finally, I'm having serious problems with the wireless connection. I have the intel card, and I have so far been unsuccessful at any attempt to connect wirelessly to an access point (and I've tried quite a few). The computer doesn't get assigned an IP address. I read on here that some people have had problems with the antennas not being connected, and I think that may be the problem.

Whew... sorry about the long-windedness factor here, but I tend to find small problems pretty easily on these things. At least you didn't have to read all the cries for help I had on my Dell. If anyone can help with any of these problems, I would appreciate it.

well to disable the password manager i don't know but in my case i delete client security solution software because everytime when resuming from standby it ask me to swipe and after that nothing happens and seemed to be frozen or such only i see the desktop picture but never see the taskbar and no button on my keyboard respond so, it made me force it to shut down by pressing and hold the power button. i tried several times and always force it to shutdown. and also i use to have the some websites blocking and is not the flash or active x that cause the problem really is the client security it really messed me up. the bes solution is to uninstall CSS.

after i delete the program i currently keeping the finger print software and only it ask me to swipe my finger to logon windows and that's it and at control center you can also to set the finger reader to swipe starting at power on , HD and windows logon at only one single swipe. (to do this you need to set power on password and HD password in BIOS settings).

for the ultrabay LED well I don't know how to disable, sorry if this is very annoying to you , maybe on power management you can set to turn off the ultrabay when on standby if this option is available.

For the wireless, did you tried to use access connections or the windows wizzard?
is your computer has found any routers around your house or neighborhood?
what brand of router you are using? and what type of security you are trying to set? I have linksys and i'm using WPA not WPA2 (WPA2 doesn't work) so WPA is working flawlessly with me and have a very nice connection and also i have the intel card as you!
so let me know maybe i can help you with this!

1. You're getting the CPU reading on SpeedFan not the GPU (which generates much more heat than the CPU itself). From here, you could download TPFanControl and make the program to activate the fan at about 60C.

2. Uninstall CSS and the fingerprint software if you don't use it. I don't know if you could disable Biometric Security in the BIOS so that Windows doesn't assign IRQ resources to that feature

3. You could get rid of the green light if you left-click on the Windows taskbar 'Safely Remove Hardware' and select to 'remove' the CD-RW/DVD drive (which ever thing you've on the Ultrabay Slim) and the green light would shut off (but you wouldn't be able to use the drive until you release/snap the lever again)

4. It's better to let Windows Wireless Config Utility do the job. No need to have more software from Lenovo that just makes things difficult Uninstall Access Connections.

Remove the AC (Access Connection) software from your thinkpad. it gives lots of problems to me too. Follow Benottomex\'s suggestions. :-)

Do you think AC is not good to have? sorry to ask you but i don't have any problems "yet" with connection. Or you consider uninstall until i get an issue? because I still using AC. and I have like 3 weeks with my laptop.

I concur, the Client Security Suite is a nuisance if not used (and it slows down the computer with the security chip activated).
The fingerprint software can still be used to boot (and complete login) on the computer, So I would use it for that.

Well, Access Connections is a great utility if you have no problems with it.. But it sucks really bad if thigs start to go wrong. So I would not recommend uninstallation if you have no problem with it.

BTW, this forum is great :)

Wow thanks for all the tips and ideas everyone! My biggest concern is the wireless connection. Since I'm a college computer engineering student, not having wireless is really hampering my computing abilities. I'll see what I can do tomorrow/later today (it's 2 am here) and post back.

Oh, and something else I thought of... I keep on hitting Fn instead of Control, simply because I'm used to their places being the other way around. Is there a way to remap the keys or just a mental trick so I can adjust to it? I don't want to know how many keyboard shortcuts I've done and been stumped for a second when nothing happens.

Thanks again and I'll let you guys know how things turn out.

You can't remap the keys. There are plenty of utilities out there that allow you to remap keys, but none of them offer real support of the Fn-key, because it's different than the other keys and is integrated deeply into the system.

Your best bet is to be patient. You'll find out that it's not that hard to adjust. I've been confused at first with the Fn/Ctrl thing too, and also with the fact that Esc is above F1 and not to the left of it, like it normally is. But after a short while your fingers just learn.

Okay, I got around to going through what you guys said and I'm grateful to everyone. Every issue on my list has been solved and it would have taken me a really long time on my own. That fan control program is awesome, especially that at a certain temperature it can kick back fan control to the BIOS. Thanks all!
