DVD writing
DVD writing
I'm new to having a DVD+/- RW on a laptop. I assumed I could put in a disk and drag and drop, or copy and paste, as with CDs. However, I can't use a DVD until I format it first. Is that how it should work?
I'm aware if the various check boxes from my earlier R40 - enable recording on the drive, enable DLA, etc.

Drag and drop works after format but then the drive goes a bit nuts and doesn't stop. I have to highlight it and then Ctrl - Alt - Del to shut it off. Dropping starts the write - i.e. I don't have to click on "write these files to CD" as I do with CDs. Copy and paste seemed to work last night OK. I have to play around a bit more to be sure of a pattern here.

IBM's DLA should enabled drag&drop, that's true. However, if you search this forum or just ask some people, they'll tell you that the amount of potential problems caused by DLA or similar packet writing software is so big (not writing, not recognizing disks, etc), that the little extra convenience it adds is not worth all the crap you may encounter at one point or another. DLA is one of the first things people here suggest to uninstall.
The preferred method to me has always been using a designated CD burning software, such as Nero (my favorite). Nero 6 is what I suggest, as Nero 5 is old and Nero 7 is still known to be glitchy on occasion (also probably heavier).

Well that's really helpful. I have to say I have always found DVD recording unpredictable and flaky. I have an external recorder that came with Nero Burning ROM 5 and managed occasionally to get it to work before giving it up a couple of years ago. That's also the reason I've only now tried my third DVD with the TP after getting it two months ago.
I'll look for a copy of NB 6 and and hope to start using DVDs as easily as CDs. I frequently have to move 500 - 700MB satellite image files so this would make life easier.
Thanks again.

I also use Nero 6 for burning data files(on desktop PC), seems to work fine. I'm using the Sonic Record Now software on my A20m laptop with the Panasonic DVD-RW drive, has worked fine also.
For burning audio CDs, I have used Feurio for quite some time, think it is an excellent program.
