HELP...T40 wont go into Standby Mode

#1 Post by Skysurfer » Tue Sep 14, 2004 11:17 pm

Please help!

Yesterday, I had to format my T40s C-drive. I used IBMs restore feature and reloaded MS Office and Norton AV and Firewall and all the data files. After which, the machine refused to go into Standby Mode. Every time I attempted, the following error message popped up:

"The device driver for the 'Agere Syetems AC'97 Modem' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

Well, I installed the latest driver. That didn't work. I called up IBM tech support and they didn't have the answer. I recall 18 months ago there was the same problem with this machine and a simple solution that I just can't remember.

Any ideas??? The machine is useless (from a security point of view) without standby mode.

Thanks,

Lawrence

As always one guess could be uninstalling Norton AV and see if it helps.

Another try: install a little freeware Tool like Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml), go to HKLM/Run and deactivate the checkbox for AGRSMMSG. This is the Agere Modem driver which is loaded at startup by default. Deactivating it could solve your problem. And if you need the modem later at some time, you can activate it again with this little tool.

Turn the modem OFF in the Configuration Utility.

It wont be the modem driver itself causing the problem - it will be some other application USING the modem driver which is stopping suspend. Try to work out what app that could be - AOL springs to mind.

A similar problem occurs with the "keyboard driver" stopping suspend - this is down to Adobe Type Manager (among others) which maps the keyboard driver:

Yes! I discovered the problem. It was Quicken, of all things.

After uninstalling everything Norton, the only program left (I reformatted the C drive on Monday) that accessed the Net was Quicken. So I uninstalled it, and lo and behold I could then enter standby mode.

Here's the issue according to the Inuit Web site. On several versions of Quicken, there is a piece of software loaded that performs background downloading from the Web. That software apparently had a history of keeping PCs from entering standby or hybernate modes.

The solution is to open Quicken and, under connection options, disable background downloading. Then reboot.

Thank you n3il and s0larian! :D
