600x Freezes during OS Installation
600x Freezes during OS Installation
Hi there, I'm new here, my name is Nuke
I got a 600x TP and swapped out the cpu from a 500mhz to a 650mhz
But I tried installing XP and everytime it's installing devices, half way through the device install, it would freeze, now if it push on the on/off switch for a quick second, it'll resume the install, freeze again, and i would have to keep hitting it throughout the whole installation...and when done installing, i would have to keep hitting it over and over to keep it loading off the hard drive
any help, please?
I did update to the latest bios from ibm/lenovo's site
But I did notice it saying the bios date was 1999?

Re: 600x Freezes during OS Installation
Welcome to thinkpads.com!
If that does not solve your problem, then you may have an issue with the hard drive or hard drive controller or a power problem with the motherboard. In that case, give a holler back in this thread.
BIOS Update 600X (diskette)
There appears to be some confusion on the dates with respect to the release dates. As long as you have "ITET55WW", then that's the latest.
Halting in the middle of the OS install is typically the result of a bad modem card in a T23. The same may be true in the 600X (I've never encountered that particular error with my systems). You may want to try removing the MiniPCI modem board, located behind the small square panel on the bottom side of the laptop towards the back. Once removed, try re-installing the OS.Nuke209 wrote:<snip>... half way through the device install, it would freeze, now if it push on the on/off switch for a quick second, it'll resume the install, freeze again, and i would have to keep hitting it throughout the whole installation...

The latest BIOS version for the 600X should be dated 10/2001 and can be found here:Nuke209 wrote:I did update to the latest bios from ibm/lenovo's site But I did notice it saying the bios date was 1999?

I had exactly the same when I changed my 450 to 750MHz
Reason for this is the change from non-speedstep to speedstep cpu.
Be patient and toggle Fn+F11/F12 2-300 times or so.
You will se the HDD diode flashing during the operation verifying some progress. Don't give up you will get trough this even if it takes time.
After this finger practice, when your OS is installed you have to change the processor driver from (Intel pIII processor) to (Intel-processor) in the device manager, the second one on the list.
Sometimes you have to press Fn+F2 upon start and when you go from AC to Battery and vice versa.

aw, bad news...came back again for some reason?
I think I'll toss in the 500mhz back in, to get rid of the problem
I noticed, sometimes at a cold boot, it'll just have an underscore, instead of booting to windows, I usually press Fn+F3 and it'll boot into windows, freezes, then Fn+F12 and it'll continue, lol
I did swap the cpu driver to Intel Processor...didn't help too much
hey vanaya, PM me, I have an extra 650mhz (besides the one i'm using) If you want it.

I assume your mobo is non-SS, and you have replaced the cpu to SS, did you check afterwards if you got full speed at 650MHz?
Some (not me) had success forcing the cpu always going high speed with the SS-mod on MMC-2 module and the DeepSleep utility.
My system halted several times before during start and when I switched between AC and Battey. Fortunatly the driver change including Speedswitch & Intel SS did the trick for me.
God Luck!
