OEM Version - 32 bit to 64 bit

#1 Post by rgrossha » Fri Feb 02, 2007 4:59 pm

Hi all --

I'm replacing my t43p with a t60p with IBM's OEM version of Vista. IBM calls it a "32 bit version". Will I be able to upgrade it somehow to 64 bit?

Thanks!

Rob

I actually had something IBM before the 570, but it wasn't memorable.

Can I upgrade to a 64-bit edition of Windows Vista if I update my machine to a 64-bit processor down the line?

Yes, if your machine has a 64-bit processor and is capable of running the 64-bit edition of Windows Vista, you can upgrade to the 64-bit edition of the Windows Vista product that you purchased, in accordance with the license terms of your product. Also, in accordance with the transfer rights contained within the license you purchased, you can transfer this upgrade to a different PC, installing either the 32-bit or 64-bit edition on that PC. Please refer to the Microsoft Software License Terms of the product license to determine the terms for either of these options.

32 to 64

#3 Post by rgrossha » Fri Feb 02, 2007 7:49 pm

Hi

I was hoping that my 32 bit OEM version would somehow magically also allow 64 bit.

My thought was, when the machine comes, to immediately go to 64 bit.

The machine is 64 bit capable.

Thoughts?

Not a chance. They are completely different kernels.

Furthermore, in the OEM copies, you one get 32-bit OR 64-bit. Not both. You have to pay for SECOND OEM copy to get a 64-bit version.

Only retail boxes come with both 32-bit and 64-bit.

Furthermore, that OEM copy (once activated) is tied to the motherboard it was first installed on and will NOT activate a second time. This was in the EULA for XP, but MS did not enforce it. THEY ARE enforcing it strictly with Vista.
