WTB: IBM X-Series X31/x32, X60 or Ibm 240Z

#1 Post by Jvivek » Sat Feb 03, 2007 2:27 am

I am been lurking around this site reading tons of post and decided to buy one of the following laptops:

X31/X32

or

X60

or

240Z, 240X with xga screen <-rare but it will be nice to have legacy serial port.

Please pm me with your offer.

All 240X models have SVGA only. Most 240Z models also only have SVGA, but one or two have XGA. If you can't find an XGA 240Z, the very slightly more common (though still extremely rare!) S30 might be a good substitute.

PM sent.

It'll be good if you can post a price range - more people might respond.

With the exception of a used X60, none of these models are going to sell for enough that the owner, unless already planning to get rid of their laptop, is going to offer to sell it to you. Using the X31/X32 as an example, they are still fully functional and do everything that most subnotebook owners would want. They have achieved near cult-like status for many owners. Why would a satisfied owner of such a laptop choose to sell it for the few hundred dollars it would fetch? As a spare laptop they are certainly worth more than that to the owners who paid maybe $1200 to more than $1500 for them just a year or two (or maybe 3) ago.

My X32 is on its 4th hard drive; not because it needed it but because I've continued to upgrade it. It is almost as functional as the X60 I bought but am returning (awaiting a replacement) due to very hot right palmrest temps.

The rapid onset of planned obsolescence with laptops is beyond ridiculous these days. It would make sense if the newer ones could really do anything that the old ones can't, or do it better, but in most cases they really can't, at least for most users. It is exactly like the newer software releases. Is there honestly anything that even 3% of users need from MS Office that the 2007 version does better than the XP or 2003 or 2000 versions? The last useful advance I've seen with that software was the ability to turn off that obnoxious paperclip character, and that was about 5 years ago.

There's someone who's been selling X31s, one machine each day, with an included ultrabase, on ebay. The seller has been referenced in some posts on these forums. I'm not sure what the final sales prices have been but you could find out by doing a completed items search on ebay under "X31 Thinkpad"

I think those models are new or in new condition, have no operating system, and have about a 1.5 year's warranty remaining.

Those X31s have wiped disks (nothing on them, including the OS). However, they do have the COA stickers, so they are licensed to use Windows XP. You'll just need to locate a CD image ...

Or find an OEM Windows XP CD, which is much easier to do.

If you go to eBay's "Advanced Search" page and indicate that you want items "available to Canada", you will find 9 X31's. These are the 3 cheapest ones with BIN:

$429.99US plus shipping

$449.99US plus shipping

I work outside a lot, I am hoping this laptop will be able to deal and work in -20 weather inside my van, I don't really want the weight of toughbook.

I use my hp 4700 pocket pc, I always leave it sitting in my van, the coldest day here was -37 and it worked like a charm.

So you don't mind having only SVGA (800x600) resolution any more? The 240X also only has one USB port and doesn't have built-in ethernet. The 240Z has two USB ports (I think, but am not sure), and some models have built-in ethernet and XGA.

240x is SVGA, which can be rather painful just web surfing these days -- many sites expect you to have at least XGA.

Why not an X2 series?

If you're willing to go a little larger than the models you've specified, you should try taking a look at the 570 and 570E as they have a tendancy to go for relatively cheap on eBay from time to time. I managed to snag a 333mhz 570 on eBay last year for $50 and there are 570Es going for just over $100.

I forgot to mention that the I series 1124 is very similar to the 240Z, including having 10.4" XGA. It's probably equally rare though.

This site has more photos of the i1124.

The 240 series don't make much sense and are not that great - just light. For $100-$200, I'd pick up an X20 or X21. For $200 too $350, I'd pick up an X22, X23 or X24. I did just pick up an X40 for $500. Now that's a nice ride.

I've owned all except an X21. The 240 wasn't anything special and the keyboard layout was a little wierd.

The 240Z is worth pursuing because it's a collector's item. Even the 240X is much rarer than the X series. Another reason for trying to get a 240/X/Z is it's cute! I would not mind paying a little more for a 240Z than for an X22.

You give up after 14 days?

You should try checking eBay, if you want a 240 series....most members here, if they have one, aren't going to part with it.

Right, that's too soon! I have been looking for an affordable HP nc2400 or Panasonic Y4/Y5 for half a year and am still checking eBay several times a week. That's what we need to do if we are unwilling to shell out big bucks for a nice laptop. Patience is important.
