Rescue and Recovery 3.1 and 4 does not install
Rescue and Recovery 3.1 and 4 does not install
When I try to install Rescue and Recovery 3.0, 3.1 or 4 under XP, I get the error message 'There is not enough free space in the boot sector to install the Rescue and Recovery boot manager'. The installation process then terminates.
In IBM's considerations I found a reference to 'Utimaco Safeguard Easy and Novel ZENworks', which both have never been installed on my T43.
Any idea how to eliminate or circumvent this problem?

Re: Rescue and Recovery 3.1 and 4 does not install
I suggest you don't install it. If you already have a version of R&R on the machine, leave it there and don't replace it. R&R has been a topic of ongoing discussions here (and mostly on the general software/hardware forum). I refer you there for the issues being discussed or use your search function to find other threads scattered about.Peter8049 wrote:When I try to install Rescue and Recovery 3.0, 3.1 or 4 under XP, I get the error message 'There is not enough free space in the boot sector to install the Rescue and Recovery boot manager'. Whichever version of R&R came installed on your machine would be the best one to have for use on the road if you need to reconstitute your hard drive. For other drive backup purposes I would recommend using a robust imaging program such as Norton Ghost 2003 or Acronis True Image.

R&R 3.1 and 4: not enough free space in Boot Sector
Thanks, Ken - I would prefer to upgrade to 3.1 or 4 because 3.0 has several errors, e.g. does not execute scheduled backups correctly. But at least, manual backup works.
I am not sure if this is your answer, but check the security setting for the Predesktop Area in the BIOS. I believe it should be set to Normal. It is possible you may also need to set the BIOS settings for the hard drive to Compatibility Mode.
If you log on as Administrator and go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management, what shows up for a FAT32 partition, and what is it's size?

R&R 3.1 and 4: not enough free space in Boot Sector
Predesktop Security is indeed on NORMAL. Couldn't find a Harddrive Compatibility entry in the Bios.
The IBM Service Partition on my TP43 is as follows:
FAT32, Status: Healthy (EISA Configuration), 3.96 GB, 335 MB free, 8% free.
I also checked this entry on my business TP40 running with RnR 3.1 - and did not find a Service Partition at all. Is this partition only needed for RnR 3.0 and earlier?

Re: R&R 3.1 and 4: not enough free space in Boot Sector
My bad. Compatibility Mode is for SATA drives which the T43 uses, but that setting is not in the T43 BIOS. It is in the T60 BIOS.Peter8049 wrote:Couldn't find a Harddrive Compatibility entry in the Bios.

I believe your problem is that the Service Partition is too small. Why this is, I cannot say. On my T42 the Service Partition is 4.55 GB. A T40 is not set up with a Type 12 FAT32 Service Partition.
I believe the reason ashleys could install RnR without a service partition is that his boot partition (C: drive) was large enough to hold RnR. I believe the boot partition on your T43 is not the C: drive, but rather the Service Partition. I admit this is a little speculation on my part, but this is my theory.
EDIT: I case you are wondering, on my T42 I did upgrade to RnR version 3 once, but after using the Product Recovery Discs at a later date, I decided to stay with the originally installed version - version 1.

R&R 3.1 and 4: not enough free space in Boot Sector
Before I delete the IBM Service Partition and lose the factory restore configuration: how could I increase the boot sector?
Re: R&R 3.1 and 4: not enough free space in Boot Sector
Whatever you do, make an image of the drive WITH the recovery partition UNLESS you have a set of recovery disks that can create the recovery partition later. When it gets time to sell the machine, you should restore it or offer to restore it with the original service partiton in placePeter8049 wrote:Before I delete the IBM Service Partition and lose the factory restore configuration: how could I increase the boot sector?

That is correct. All the files that comprise the RnR pre-desktop area are on my C: drive. Furthermore, it is recognised as another bootable "Windows" system. For example, if I go into the XP Recovery Console it asks me which Windows system I wish to choose.
R&R 3.1 and 4: not enough free space in Boot Sector
Sounds promising - I'll first try to increase the Service Partition and if not successful, delete it. If I later want to sell my TP, I still have my factory CDs. I can't do this excercise before the weekend, but I'll keep the forum posted.
Well.... This is not common but it happens. RnR has an 8k bootstrap........Very dependent on the MBR....
I had this happen once...
I tried this.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62978
Or was it this...
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54483
If that doesn't work.....It might have been from another link that I downloaded the tool from Lenovo.
Actually I think the utility was from here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ADMIN#tvsu
You need to download the RnR admin tools from that link.
Extract that and it will create a folder here C:\SWTOOLS\TOOLS\Admin022 The 022 may be different as that reflected a specific version.
Within that folder is a utility called cleanmbr Run that, then you can install the new RnR.

Nuance issues.... Installing 3.1 over 3.01 causes 3.1 to use the TVT.txt file for it's admin config and not be able to use group policy. - just one example.ashleys wrote:I've used every version of RnR since V1 and have always installed 'over the top'.
I only had one problem (upgrading between V3 releases) and that appeared to be a packaging error.
YMMV though.
R&R 4 installation: Error
While I could remove the Boot Sector space error message after applying the RnR repair diskette (ISO image) and recreating the MBR as suggested by wackydan, the installation of RnR 4.0 now stops with the following error message:
Error 25011. A file required to install the RnR environment could not be located. ... Make sure that the correct .tvt file is located in the same folder as this setup package ...
which actually is the case.
Any idea?

Re: R&R 4 installation: Error
What is the installation file you are using? The huge one with all language support, the English only, or the separate IT centric installer that is dependant on other packages in the install path?Peter8049 wrote:While I could remove the Boot Sector space error message after applying the RnR repair diskette (ISO image) and recreating the MBR as suggested by wackydan, the installation of RnR 4.0 now stops with the following error message:

R&R 4 installation: Error
I used the following file: tvtrnr4_1112en.exe with 204 MB, dated Jan 7, 2007.
This file unloads to C:\SWTOOLS\apps\rnr40en.

I fixed that by downloading and installing the FULL version of Rescue and Recovery -containing ALL languages. I have an idea that the problem may be caused by the fact that I am using (and downloaded) an English (UK) version to my UK-XP but with all locals set to Denmark (where I live).
Best regards

Jens, did you get the same error message 25011? Since I use the Swiss German local together with XP in US English, it could be the same issue.
Is the operating language of RnR on your TP now Danish or English? Did you uninstall RnR 3 first?

@peter 8049
I am also in Switzerland, using a US English XP with Swiss locale
and I get the same error 25011 when I try to install r&r 4.2 on my t60.
I uninstalled rnr 3 first - which worked only after doing some whacky tricks - but now I am stuck without being able to install rnr 4.2.
Have you fixed the problem yet?

RnR 4 on TP with English XP and diffent keyboard language
Yes, David, I finally managed to install
z501_setup_rnr40_114c.exe, full version, 443 MB
end of March 2007, and later upgraded to newer versions without problems. Obviously, with the shorter English version the installation routine was (or still is) asking for a .TVT file in the keyboard or local language, which of course is not there.
If I remember correctly, when using RnR for emergency recovery the menus now are in German, although the application shows up in English. But I don't remember for sure.
