z60m and cpu heat levels

I have a z60m (2ghz 760M w/ Ati mobility x600) that gets pretty darn hot and its left me a little concerned.

Idle temp: ~42C

High load temp (antivirus or spybot, etc): ~87C (highest i've seen is 90C!?)

Is this something I should be concerned about? those numbers seem mighty high in comparison to my gf's 1.8 dell laptop that idles at ~34C and loads ~51C

wow.. that was an awful pain but i finally got it done.. according to the compound manufacturer it takes ~ 200 hours and several heat cycles to fully break-in but already it ideals ~ 38C

Yep, and i am among the most unlucky ones because 1 of my heatsink screw is screwed so tight and i could not unscrewed it off so i bring the thinkpad all the way to the service centre which was 1 and a half hour journey for me and the engineer got someone to unscrew and changed the screw for me.

Guess what? Their screw driver scratched my LCD screen with 1 tiny white line and broke 1 of my keyboard keys.

But i got everything fixed the next day with the same engineer.

May I ask what your temperature under high load (equivalent load as before) is now?

Have some problems here too and hate to have to open up the machine but what must be done must be done so to speak.

Drop by 5-6 degree celsius after applying the paste. Temp around: 50 degree celsius during very intensive gaming sessions.

So far it is OK because I'm using NHC to keep the CPU down but it actually doesn't make sense when the laptop has a 2 GHz processor and you can't use its full potential.

I will give this a shot. My local Radioshack carries some of this stuff for I think 9 dollars which is not so bad at all.

How would you rate the difficulty level for the application, was is really hard to do ?

did you get a regular silver compound or did it say "Arctic silver 5"? (its proprietary).

Applying the compound was easy,getting the laptop apart was the hard part. It was nerve racking since notebook parts are so small and one has to be very very careful about static electricity. I used a maintenance manual i found on the ibm site as well as some videos on how to remove the palmrest and keyboard. I could do it again without much of a problem, but the first time through was a pain in the rear.

i just lowered all my cpu voltage settings in NHC and that also has helped with temps

ok, i am looking forward to reading your tutorial.

Just apply the thermal paste on the CPU die. (Thin layer will do). Don't need to squeeze so much of thermal grease on the CPU as this will reduce the overall effect. A think layer will do you fine. Then use your finger to spread the grease evenly and WASH your finger after that.

I forgot to wash my finger the other day after spreading the thermal grease and i ate something and in the end suffered from serious stomachache... (forgetful me and silly me) *now laughing at my post*...

I finally got some of the Arctic Silver 5 at Radio Shack for $ 9.99.

All I need now is to find some time to get this stuff on the CPU. I really hope I don't have to clean or remove anything before that.

Is it better to remove the entire CPU ?

I just did a regular backup yesterday and the temperature jumped up to 85 degrees Celsius.

Maybe I will wait for the tutorial to be posted.
