New T41 owner. help please.

#1 Post by amrav » Sun Feb 04, 2007 7:53 am

Gurus,

Just bought a T41 on the ebay with a few months warranty.
First thing I want to do is upgrade HD and the RAM.

My question is regarding a HD upgrade:

I have XP PRO retail copy which I would like to use to instatll the OS.

Is it as straight forward as just install windows from the OS cd and then install all the drivers from the Lenovo support site ?

Are there any issues involved in this way of clean install ?

Thanks in advance.

None at all. This is my preferred method to recover my Thinkpad. For maximum performance just install the drivers you would use and disable any unecessary devices you wouldn't use (modem, ethernet..)

Thanks.
I am a bit intrigued by the "XP SP2 Lite" in your signature.
What does it mean ?

Put the relevant display driver and any network drivers on a memory stick prior to doing the clean XP install, so you can get full functionality the display and network up quickly....... as the standard XP install doesn't always detect the ThinkPad T4x hardware correctly in my experience.

Other than that, it's fairly straightforward

Cheers,

I know this might seem out of place, but I installed Kubuntu (that is linux) on my T41 and found that everything apart from the modem works out of the box - including suspend to RAM and hibernate to disk. After two hours I even got the modem running.

Well, just in case you're interested...
bog standard T41 (2373), 54MBit Wlan, DVD-burner, purring along at 35°C or thereabouts on ArchLinux
