Hi, it depends on what you want to do with the machine, but in general I would go First with a memory upgrade, then probably a hard disk upgrade (you'll notice a huge change in performance going from your 30GB to a 100GB / 7200 one.. and for last you can also upgrade processor (depending on which one you have right now). The graphics chip can't be upgraded.

Hi and thank you for quick response

My T40 has P M 1.3 cpu and it is far to slow. Currently I am running Windows XP 2003 on it and and a big Photo album.

How big CPU and HD can I use.

Can you give me detail about what to buy...

HD RAM

Upgrading the CPU is the most complex of all,

So I suggest the following for a hard drive:
Remember to avoid buying one with Serial ATA interface.

RAM:

You can upgrade it to maximum 2GB by buying 2 sticks of 1gb.

For example here:

I am not sure newegg ships overseas or not.

you want 1 gig of ram and around 100 gig hard drive for an upgrade that makes sense both as far as performance gain and costs go.

upgrading the processor is not going to improve all that much, imo.

I upgraded my RAM to 1Gig and upgraded to a 7200 RPM 100GB hard drive and the difference was amazing. Still running the 1.3 CPU and not having any performance problems whatsoever.

Does the 7200 RPM 100GB hard drive on amrav's link fit into the existing HD slot on a thinkpad 42p?

Silfur:

The advice you've already got is sound: Memory (1gb - the T40 will take PC2700 - it will be cheaper than PC2100!), HDD 80gb-100gb 7200rpm, if you have wireless (it would be an 802.11b card in your machine), get an a/b/g card or a b/g card.

Lastly comes the processor. You have to remove the keyboard to get at that (but you'll likely do that anyway to replace the 1st memory SODIMM). Look at the posts on this board regarding processor upgrades - you need a 400MHz FSB processor or you may end up with a slower processor speed than you 1.3! But this is likely the least effective upgrade - the Pentium M chip was great chip and I think you'll find the memory and HDD will be just what you need.

I just did this upgrade myself and went from 756 ram to 2g and 5400 rpm to 7200. I then did the 2915abg wireless card. Last I went from 1.5 banias to 2.0 dothan. The ram and hard drive were by far my best bang for the buck. Try to go straight for 2x1g ram modules. Your very last upgrade should definitely be the cpu and I would suggest getting a 1.8 dothan for the best return on investment.
