Does wireless turn itself off if no network in area?
Does wireless turn itself off if no network in area?
Does the wireless turn itself off if it cannot detect a network in the area?
I upgraded to the Atheros card for improved performance and to hopefully get rid of the annoying auto-shutdown of the old card. The Atheros card has worked flawlessly, however now I notice it shuts itself off but there are no wireless networks where I am.

Access Connections will switch off a wireless card if you have a "Best available network" profile, and are connected to a wired network. I don't think this is what you were talking about, though.Trolle wrote:Does the wireless turn itself off if it cannot detect a network in the area?

I see this behaviour.
I've seen this happening to my X60s.
The computer tries to connect and if it fails (for whatever reason) the network card goes off.
I don't think of this a problem, really. I look at it more like a feature, i.e., no connection, no power to the card. If I want to use it again, I just go to ThinkVantage Access manager and select "connect" to whatever Wi-Fi hotspot I want.

I know that the card is powered off since the LED is no longer illuminated and I have to manually power on the card from Access Connections.
Since this is happening in my office where I have a wired connection I assume this is what is happening. Thanks.
I was just curious since I had the problem earlier where the card powered itself off during use.

Check out the following link that I just saw in the T60 forum as a solution to the disconnect problem with the Intel 3945abg adapter. I am not sure if something similar would apply to the Atheros adapter or not.
