Just did a clean XP install and.. cant find a driver!

I think I've got all the driver but I must have missed one!

Ive got XP Pro SP2 loaded on this machine.
In my device manager I have one "Unknown Device" listed there.

From software installer, these are the things I have not installed:

Access Help
Keyboard Customizer Utility
Presentation director
Thinkpad configuration package
thinkpad hotkey feature
thinkpad message centre
thinkvantage away manager
thinkvantage system migration assistant
thinkvantage system update
trackpoint accessibility features
ultranav wizzard

or what else could it possibly be?

I doubt it would be any of those things. But, The most obvious thing to check is to see what doesn't work?

The first possibility that comes to my mind is that the unknown device is the modem/audio card. To get the driver for that, you have to install the windows OS updates provided by Lenovo. Then you can install audio and modem drivers.


Another canidate is that your chipset on the laptop is not being recognized by windows. You will need to install the Intel INF files. You can obtain these from:

Those are the most obvious things (to me) that I would try.

ive installed chipset, modem, bluetooth, vga, and pretty much anything/everyhting else i can think of.

ive also tested everything i can and it all seems to work.

How about the TPM (Trusted Platform Module),

i looked up the tpm and it seems to only be used on thinkcentre desktops

and i have installed the hdd protection


can anyone with a similar t60p pls go into device manager and blow up all of the branches and save it as one big image file for me??

In older Thinkpads that Unknown Device is generally the Thinkpad PM Device in other words you should download the:

ThinkPad Power Management driver for Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP/Vista - ThinkPad - 2007-01-22

After installing that package you should have all your Thinkpad drivers working.

the trusted platform module is indeed part of thinkpad laptops. Besides I know for a fact my Z61p and my T60p both have this.

After having to reinstall ALL of these thinkpad tools, what did you gain by doing the clean XP Install? What is now gone? How much space did you recover.

Not trying to sound funny, but was planning on doing the same when my t60p arrives. Just wondering from your experience, was the event worth it? Or would it be just as effect to simply uninstall the crap you did not want?

I would imagine that it would be well worth it. I've got my T60 and I've gone around uninstalling stuff that I don't want/need and it's still running 80 processes on initial boot up! In contrast, right now, I'm on my other computer (since I haven't got round to doing it yet) is running at 62 processes and I have over 10 things running right now (Firefox,IE,Dev IDE,Outlook, etc,etc).

I've found that the machine can get a bit unresponsive at times too. Can't really blame Lenovo/IBM, all computers arrive like that.

Personally, for me, I ordered the system with Win XP Home, and loaded Professional on it (I can get a personal copy of Professional through my university for $10).

Note: you don't have to install every piece of Lenovo software to get your system fully up and running. But, there are a number of drivers/service packs that need to be applied for all devices to be correctly recognized.

Personally, my past experience has been, that a fresh install generally leads to better performance then when you just uninstall programs. Mostly, I think this is because of the fact that many programs' uninstallers do an insufficient job at removing shared libraries (that are no longer needed) and registry entries.

The presence of these libraries and registry entries can certainly have an effect on the performance of your system. I have done no study looking into how well Lenovo's installers are at removing all of their changes to the system when they are uninstalled.

Would you guys have a document or step by step guide to doing this to your t60p? After I start up the computer, and make sure it works, I am going to blow it away, and reinstall Windows 3.11...just kidding, xp Pro.....but just image how fast 3.11 would fly!!!
