64-bit VISA, where?

#1 Post by Rwang » Mon Feb 05, 2007 1:15 pm

Bought a T60p in Dec. 2006. Checked lenovo.com/vistaupgrade, which pointed me to some other website. Further navigation only reveals 32-bit Vista distributions. When will the 64-bit upgrade be offered?

And am I wrong or the Vista Home Premium is $80+ for the XP home purchasers? When I bought it, I though it would be free????

Home Premium is free when upgrade from Prof or Media Center. Otherwise it bites, that's obviously not value for money. As about 64bit, it's smart to download it from somewhere and use the key from the 32bit Version you buy. The story with different keys for 32 and 64 as it used to be for WinXP is over.

Windows Vista is available in 64 bit in the Ultimate flavor only. I have only seen it as a OEM install DVD, but there might be a retail version.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

This is COMPLETELY WRONG. Where did you get this idea from?

Vista is available in 64-bit in ALL Flavors. Retail copies ship with both 32-and 64-bit copies in one package. OEM copies are EITHER 32-bit or 64-bit, so you have to make sure you order a 64-bit copy.

Yes, it is true that retail affords both 32-bit and 64-bit versions but I've read on the MS Vista newsgroup that only with Ulitmate are both 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs shipped which is what I received. With the other versions it comes only with the 32-bit one and you must order the 64-bit DVD.

The reason why I concluded Vista was only 64 bit in Ultimate is from an earlier news article that said that Ultimate would be the only version in 64 bit, and Microcenter has 64 bit Vista in Ultimate only.

So, now I buy Vista 64-bit instead of 32-bit.

What is are the pros and cons?

Do I have to use 64-bit programs ONLY on x86 or can I still run 32-bit programs?

Thanks
