is there any difference between A31P 2653 and 2654 series

For example, 2653R3U and 2654MU3, I checked the IBM website and found the descriptions of 2654MU3 says it is based on 2653R3U. What I can find is just the memory difference.

The logic is just not right as you can just upgrade the memory so easily and why did IBM have 2654 also?

I found there is a topic previously talking about it but didn't explain in details about 2654 and 2653 except for those about 2652 and 2653 & 2654. Can any one help me? Thanks.

Totally conjecture on my part, but it could be something I've just recently found out about 2647 and 2648 T23s in this thread:

Basically it looks like a difference in the warranty coverage between the two different type numbers.
