Which T43 Wireless card to get?

#1 Post by thespeakerbox » Tue Feb 06, 2007 4:40 pm

What other cards are compatible with the T43. I've seen alot of threads saying alot of card are incompatible. Are there guidelines other than Mini PCI i should consider when looking for a wifi card?

I would normally get the IBM card but its 60 bucks! I was hoping to pick up something comparable for much cheaper.

I'd really suggest getting mini-pc. The intel pro wireless 2200 is a good option.

Another vote for the 2200bg, very reliable and I have never had a dropped connection.

I've seen alot on Ebay , but many say DELL or SONY parts.

It shouldn't make any difference , right? I assume Dell and Sony can put their own part number on the same device , even though there is no difference in the actual card.

Wrong, unfortunately.

Some laptops, including the ThinkPad T4x series, have a whitelist of PCI cards they will accept, so it does indeed make a difference. If you use a PCI card in a ThinkPad T4x that isn't on the whitlelist, you will get an 1802 error on booting.

For a ThinkPad T4x, acceptability of a WiFi card is related to looking up an OEM value in the firmware of the card, so only cards with an IBM/Lenovo OEM value will be accepted.

There is a CMOS spoof available for ThinkPad T4x models which will allows bypassing the 1802 error message and allows the card to (mostly) work, but you don't get the full ThinkVantage functionaliy with a non-IBM/Lenovo OEMed WiFi card. The spoof does work as I have used it, but eventually decided it was easier to pay a few buck more for the real IBM/Lenovo OEM version of the card and get the full ThinkVantage functionality.

Cheers,

Bill
